It really depends on where you are hunting and the time of year. I've hunted NV antelope in early August when it was 100+ degrees. The lava rocks tore my feet to shreds. In that case a medium weight hiker with a rigid sole to protect my feet from the sharp rock. It also helped having a...
I would agree that improving habitat is an important factor. Burns and weed control are a couple options for improving habitat.
Another benefit to hunting is scattering sheep so they aren't concentrated in the same area for extended lengths of time.
A lot depends upon when you plan on hunting. In Wyo many archery seasons open way before the rut and end about the time rut picks up. An antelope decoy may not do you much good if they aren't rutting. Cow decoys may work if there are cows in the area you are hunting. A horse decoy may work...
My observations are in Wyoming. Winterkill and drought tend to be the 2 key weather factors that affect doe health/horn growth in bucks. Good health of does and new born fawns would likely be a result of relatively mild winters with lush vegetation through the growing season. Optimal horn...
Walking Buffalo, would you agree that buck antelope fawns born in wet years will have larger pedicles from the day they are born until they die? A buck born in a year with great moisture will likely still grow above par massive horns in droughty years? I would be curious what you and others...
The highest scoring buck I have ever harvested in Wyo was a year with historic drought. My 2nd highest scoring buck was around 10 years earlier in a different unit with historic drought. Both areas were decent counties known for producing B&C bucks.
I burned a pile of pref pts a couple...
Start off with the best...either Kifaru or Stone Glacier. You may be able to pick up a nearly new one for around 1/2 price on Rokslide classifieds, ebay, Craigslist, or hunting website classified adds. You likely won't ever have to buy another pack and frame! If you are going to pack out elk...
If you want to speed the boiling process up dramatically place the skull inside a couple plastic garbage bags in a safe spot from dogs and any critters that can get to it. Antelope sized skulls/horns I often place under a metal garbage can and put a giant rock on top of it. Obviously cut off...
Park your truck in the shade in the coolest spot in the area. Crack the windows, wrap the cooler with sleeping bags to insulate. If you can somehow add a chunk of ice or dry ice that would obviously help. Some guys place their meat inside garbage bags and place them in a cool stream. If you...
My preference for bomber-proof tents is Hilliberg. My Hilleberg of choice is Nallo. Has a giant vestibule with gobs of room for gear. There is plenty of room in the vestibule to cook, dry clothes, and store lots of gear. It also has relatively steep side-walls which add to the usable space...
Painters plastic comes in different thickness that you can pick up at Home Depot for super cheap. Thicker plastic may be a little tougher and more waterproof than Tyvek?
I would say that around 85% of the antelope are shot within the first 2 weeks of the season. Many units are void of antelope hunters in October. Obviously in type 2 late units that have 2 separate seasons there will be hunters the first 2 weeks of the 2nd season.
Antelope hunting is fun no...
For you sheep fanatics you can find out whether you drew Colo sheep by the backdoor method on the CPW website. If you have problems figuring it out take a look at the Bowsite sheep forum explanation on how to find out. Good luck to all!
I toss every insole that I've bought with my new boots the past dozen years. The balls of my feet need a lot more cushion than what come with them. I have Tibets and have done the same. I've been using Spenco's from Sportsman's Warehouse that run around $20 and replace them a couple times/year.
They are pretty much everywhere along the north Front Range in Colorado. They come in to my bird feeder in the back yard every day. Unlike the other doves the collared ones stay around all winter long.
Thanks Steelhead, I greatly appreciate your comments! The next time I start a post I will definitely include all the details so everything is up front. The last thing I want to do is upset other hunters. I know it's best to be open and honest about all details or it will return and bite me in...
