I hunted all over the unit, over many days. As far as exactly where to hunt within Unit 21? You will find that giving out the exact spot that you hunt will murder that particular spot within 2 years, and for the foreseeable future. I'm sure that you didn't mean anything by it, but it is...
Hello, Jdd85. Here is a more detailed story, if you haven't seen it already. https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/antelope-advice-for-beginners-wy-unit-21.309906/ I would try the strategy I outlined for WyomingHunter333 in the comments below.... Also, take a buddy with you! If you are not used to...
Hey Fellas, the public land hunters won their criminal case, but now Elk Mountain Ranch is attempting to sue them. Times are getting hard for some of us- but if you can even give a little, please do so. Public land is our land, we should be able to access it. This is worth fighting for...
Ok good deal. I would suggest that you drive around the day before season, (other hunters will be doing the same thing) and find a Pronghorn herd. Once you locate a herd, get back there before daylight on opening day. With this strategy, you'll have a chance to re-locate those Pronghorn, and get...
Pancake said it correctly... ^^^^ You should have bought a point last year, but you can't fix the mistakes of the past. Buy a point this year, and every year until you draw the GEN tag. You are too close to quit now, you should draw sometime over the next 5 or 6 years, if not before.
If you go for a mule deer tag with your 3 points next year, feel free to shoot me a PM. I know that the drawing systems and public land accessibility out West can be confusing for newcomers. I wouldn't want you to waste a hunt that you've been planning for years. 3 preference points is good...
You are Ok, Jack. Just realize that Antelope and Elk may be once-in-a-lifetime tags for you, because of point creep. Over the next decade, you'll be able to draw a decent Deer, Elk, and Antelope tag, and you'll have 3 trips to WY in the bag. Just pray that WY doesn't go to a 90/10!
No way.
I like the existing system very well. I have no interest in letting people stack preference points for years, just to pull the rug out from under them.
Fair enough. It is really neat that you get to speak to the commissioner in person. Personally, I still hope that these ranchers just let the hunters get some meat and take care of their problem at the same time.
I hear you Buzz, but for my 8-6 elk tag, the rifle season runs from August 15th-January 31st. Wouldn't a similar season in these other units fix the problem? I don't think we need guys out there shooting cows and calves in May, just to control the elk numbers.
Ok, let me address the elephant in the room, here... There are PLENTY of hunters who would love to hunt these elk-myself included. If the ranchers allowed access to some hunters every year, there would be no elk over-population problems in the very near future. These "overpopulated" areas...
We started raising a couple rabbits this year (because we can keep rabbits in the city). We also bought a small chest freezer, started a garden this Spring, and applied for several doe tags that we normally wouldn't bother with. We may not need all that, but I would rather be one step ahead, if...
My wife and I drew Unit 50 this year as well. We'll be going early in the season. If someone reminds me, I'll post a hunting report on this thread at the end of September, when we get back home to Cheyenne.
