Agreed. If you are worried about score than bring a spotting scope. I would rank shooting sticks and a handheld gps (or cell phone) with On X Maps over a spotting scope. You want to be 100% on where you are shooting an animal.
How many states are you applying? I have a spreadsheet that is more of a database because I am adding in every specie in every state I am interested in hunting. The spreadsheet allows me to filter or put in order of cost, app dates, total points, etc.
It is not as pretty as say the way hunter’s...
I do already build points in WY, CO, and AZ. I don’t have a ton of disposable income but I prioritize investing in “future fun” over having nice things right now. And yes I have a mindset that it’s a donation and my odds will only decrease.
I’m curious with all your points you must have...
What if you shoot a 360+ bull and have an outstanding hunt. Do you feel it will be worth it then?
I am 28 and have 5 Utah points. I figure if I wait 20 more years I will be in a good position for a fun hunt. I plan on hunting elk and deer every Fall in some states but I am in it for the long...
Solid advice all around. You do need to find boots that fit your foot well. Some of the most expensive boots feel terrible for me because they are too narrow. I really liked the Keens I bought for my first elk hunt as they are wider and budget friendly.
High quality boots will last longer and...
I've always wondered what the age distribution is of point holders. I like to gamble on the hunting draw systems so I play even though I know the odds are bad (can't win if you don't play, right?). That being said I stay positive and think about the changes from people dropping out or less...
If you haven't been to the Black Hills in SD I highly recommend. You could stop by Devils Tower too. Pair that with some antelope scouting in Wyoming and I think you have a great family vacation.
I think it depends on your hunting goals are. Are you looking for go to a certain spot for a certain specie every five years or are you going for once in a lifetime hunts?
Welcome! I think you have a great plan. Wyoming antelope is such a fun hunt. It can be hot so be ready to get the skin off the antelope right away if possible. Also bring shooting sticks as you will be working around sage brush and will need a steady rest with some height.
Good luck!
Shhh... ;) You are correct though. It's a good deal and won't last long in my opinion. It will also inflate the number of applicants if they continue it. Good example of how states change. For better or worse depends on who you ask.
It was a great podcast, I grew up in ND and like Randy only learned the McCormicks taco seasoning route of cooking so it is fun to hear about all the possibilities. Today I learned crane is the ribeye in the sky! I want to try some jerky now and I also want to try age pheasant after the way Hank...
The wind direction is way more important than scent removal. I still try to reduce the scent on my gear but paying attention to the wind, as it will switch often, is most important.
Welcome! Be ready to be addicted. Agreed you definitely don't need the fanciest gear just set a budget and go from there. Start somewhere and you will learn what you like and what you don't. Good luck this Fall!
Love the news! I think landowners will surprise you if you ask correctly. They will listen and also notice if you are polite. Rural people are salt of the earth type of people especially in eastern MT and western ND. I haven’t knocked on many doors in WY but I’m sure it’s similar in areas.
