I’ll be pithy because I’m on the phone and don’t want to derail the thread, but I’d argue that the foundational collection of behaviors, values, and beliefs( the very definition of culture ) that people live here for - move here for, visit here for - is dominated by the rural. Even as Montana’s...
There’s been so many discussions on deer hunting and management that I’ll stay away from specifics, but something I agree with you on, Doug, that I think about a lot:
Be it hunting or really any outdoor recreation, economics, passions, and many other things, in this rapidly changing West it...
When I read that, I see a fairly mature and well thought out management plan.
I am convinced that the majority of those opposed to state management just don’t like the idea of the possibility of hunting grizzly Bears. The “ scientific” reasons I’ve heard seem based on goalposts that are moving...
From a mid October Blue grouse on the Continental divide. That stick with the needles on it was large enough that I don’t think I could swallow it. Pretty amazing.
If I were to imagine other public servants accompanying a statement position about something related to their roles, with the precursor that they are currently in that role, it sure feels like an official position.
If wrote an op-ed saying, “ I’m Nameless Range, I am an xxxx for agency yyyy...
If you took all the mule deer in regions, one, two, and three, they would not amount to the number of mule deer that exist in region seven alone.
Not really disagreeing with you, but Western Montana is not a bastion for mule deer. In fact, in most of it they are pretty sparse. Makes a solution...
For years now, I have not added any fat to my ground elk burger. No need to dilute perfection. When I cook it, I just do so in tallow or butter or bacon grease. Makes a fantastic and dense meatloaf. Not great for smashburgers. For sausage, anywhere from 40-60%.
Bringing this back up.
Lot of tears in my house last night after a local tragedy. Tragedies are sometimes unavoidable, but more often than not can be mitigated.
I don’t think their business success is relevant nor whether they are leasing public ground at a steal of a rate. I just care about being competitive with private interests and doing our best to keep access or improve it. My own experience with BM is varied but really is no different way than it...
I think in the same way it is a major error to assume UPOM is representative of the majority of landowners, so it would be to assume that ranches charging 3 grand for a cow hunt are as well.
Just take the area above in which I live. I see BMA participants(in red) who drive 25 year old Buick...
There's an aspect to all of this, and it's not to discount the very real issues folks who work the land deal with in regard to elk, of a few well-connected squeaky wheels instigating the proposal of big changes vs the majority. UPOM is a great example - well connected leadership, a lot of pull -...
I can think of a half dozen or so ranch kids who I went to high school with who are now running their folks ranches. I am 40, and some of their kids are now going to school with mine.
Not necessarily disagreeing with a lot of what you wrote, but I think “death” is a strong word. The emptier...
Just a white chicken chili recipe but substitute chicken for grouse. These were spruce grouse, which in my opinion are the least tasty of the mountain grouse, so I did marinate them ahead of time in red wine and garlic, grilled them, and diced them up before chucking them in the crockpot.
Good...
The Sheep Creek Fire burns the steep and miserable beetle kill of the Boulder Mountains over the Lowland Creek drainage on a this fine October afternoon.
I think increased financial incentivization is needed, but it should always be tied to some sort of access.
I think hard red lines not-to-be-crossed are transferable permits or just raw money for habitat. Both would simply exacerbate and incentivize the existing issues and frankly, hurt block...
