    Brawl of the Wild 2024

In the year 2003 as a freshman at MSU, I combined the better part of a fifth of Black Velvet with 5 or 6 red bulls, and stumbled over from my dorm in South Hedges to Bobcat Stadium to watch the cats get their first home victory over the griz in nearly 20 years. I don't remember it, but it...

    Montana 2025 Legislative Session

Curious what hunting/fishing bills the sausage-makers will spin up this year. When I search on the word "hunting" , there's a lot of drafts waiting in the wings, but no text yet to see what they entail. Some of the requestors of some of these drafts do make me wonder. When is the text of these...

Montanans how long since your last mule deer

The last mule deer I shot was in 2019, so 5 years ago - in eastern Montana. Been hunting Whitetails since.

    Tyson vs paul

I think Paul could’ve ended that fight at any time in the last 4 or 5 rounds but chose not to.

Gratitude For The Deer That Are There

The first shot was a great one, the second one probably didn't speed up the deer's demise, but definitely influenced its mobility. ;)

Gratitude For The Deer That Are There

Lots of bellyaching about the state of deer in Montana. The crowding, the structure of the age class, the disturbing trends. I jump in and do it too, almost always based on a juxtaposition of what I remember when I first started hunting from around 1995-2010 - my own "Good Old Days". I have not...

    Oh, the irony!

I think one could agree with state ownership of wildlife merely for the argument of a sweet spot. Feds are too big, counties are too small. Really though it’s moot at this point till a Supreme Court says otherwise. Never hunted another state, and probably never will, but have backpacked in...

    Montana mule deer rut activity

The rut is in full swing where I live, there’s just no bucks to do any rutting.

Small towns supporting high school sports

Love it. I find a lot of comfort in my small community where we live. It’s where I see human competence and service to others the most. I know that’s not the case for everyone. One side of the coin is everybody knows your business, which can be a negative. The other side of the coin though, is...

Who is funding the fight against hunting? Well you are of course…

Happy just-over-five years cleanaversary Ben. Could you imagine living a life void of the universe's finest gift? In the slightly adjusted words of the singer/songwriter Kevin Welch "There’ll be two dates on your tombstone and all your friends will read ’em but all that’s gonna matter is that...

Podcast - Utah Wants Your Public Lands

Finally got around to listening to this one. Great episode. I went googling afterward to see what some of the players have to say about their misguided mission. If anyone tells you the states could manage em better, that they’d still be there for hunting and fishing, etc - their getting...

MT Poll: (R) Gianforte, (D) Busse, or (L) Leib.

It's a fair question, and I am well aware I am in the cheap seats and not "in the arena". I admire those who step up regardless of their bent, and I think everyone should. That meme is as much about national politics as it is about Montana's. Trump gained ground in essentially every...

Like clockwork on social media today:

MT Poll: (R) Gianforte, (D) Busse, or (L) Leib.

I agree, but I have little faith in Montana's republicans to pick the most sane option in the primaries. In recent history, they often don't. I think he would have a real uphill climb with a body not built for mountaineering, but more of a chance than any other I can conceive.

CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

Well done Colorado. A hell of a lot of effort put into communication seems to have really paid off.

MT Poll: (R) Gianforte, (D) Busse, or (L) Leib.

First time in 128 years that Montana has been pure red in all those positions we voted on last night. I did not think Busse had a chance. I do hope when Knudsen runs for Governor in 4 years, Tester runs against him. We are not making Ds anymore who would appeal to Montanans. Tester had a great...
