There's nothing worse for a client. They take the first CPA they can get in with. It's happened in our area a couple times the last two years. There's honestly not enough CPAs that work at a certain level of complexity here. Covid scared a lot of CPAs out of public.
Some clients don't want the hassle of doing their own taxes. Some clients shouldn't be allowed to manage their own bank account. Other clients really could save money using the tax law to their advantage. Some business owners need a part-time CFO on their team. Really depends on your needs...
We don't take walk-ins and the referrals never stop. Most CPA firms in our area aren't taking new clients unless they're a reeeeeally good client. I understand that some client don't trust anyone else, but other professions have forced retirement/buyout age. My dad will bill about 300 hours...
Were the acquaintances CPAs as well? I'm also 35. My dad and I have a CPA practice together. He's "working on" lightening his billable hours, but with CPA's in such high demand no clients leave.
