    Mt. Lion in WI

A few years ago from my deck in VA, I spotted something that looked just like the cat in the video. I've always been rock solid in my belief that lions have long been extinct from VA but looking across the pasture 200 yards this thing clearly looked like a lion. After I got the 12x50 binos on...

    Really?

There's another site I've gone to for many years that has a "free for all" community forum on it. It's really turned into a cesspool of bickering that bleeds over onto the rest of the website. Funny thing is, I've made life long friendships with several members of that site but none of us really...

    Trekking poles

Another vote for flick locks. Twist locks work fine but will likely be the first thing that fails. Also, I rarely get more than 2 seasons out of a pair regardless of how much I spend so I've found mid-priced, cork handled aluminum to be the best value for me. Color doesn't matter because I...

Equipment: What worked and what did not

Yes: Vacmaster chamber sealer. I've put 2 elk, a few salmon, and half a garden through it this year. Awesome so far. No: still can't stand my Garmin Etrex 20 but I keep sticking with it year after year. My iphone is a much better GPS.

Any good camp sites near stafford va?

We stayed at Pohick Bay a few years ago while visiting family in Dumfries. Nice state park. Not sure if you consider 30 min close enough though.

    Gun Safe in the garage?

We have an attached 2 car garage with a 8x10 enclosed "pantry" area. I'm thinking of putting a gun safe in the pantry room. The garage is not heated and if I had to guess the temperature swings throughout the year range from low 40's in winter to upper 80's in summer. The temps are mitigated...

Testing Randy's vacuum seal meals today. Whats your favorite meal in a bag?

I experimented with these meals all season long. I found there are very few things that won't work. Scrambled eggs/bacon/potatoes work fine if you slap them on a tortilla but the texture is a little off compared to a fresh egg. It sure is nice to come back to camp, throw on a pot of water, crack...

    Camping cook set?

I have some older miss matched GSI pots that work fine. Nothing works better than cast iron for base camp use but if weight is the issue, the anodized aluminum from GSI will last you a long time. It's trickier to cook with though because it's thin aluminum and heats/cools very quickly.

    Need to vent

A decade or so ago somebody stole my fathers brass urn from his grave site. It turned out to be some teenage punk who lived nearby. Humanity has no shortage of bottom feeders — here or anywhere else I suppose.

    Pac Boots: Schnee's vs Kenetrek

I expect they're at least as good although I don't have first hand knowledge. I stopped at the Hoffman store/plant on the way back from an elk hunt not too long ago and was impressed with everything I saw. It's my understanding the lower portions come from the same "foreign" source for all 3...

    Pac Boots: Schnee's vs Kenetrek

I looked at both and ended up buying a pair of Hoffman pacs made in Kellogg, ID. Actually, I bought 2 pair. Initially I bought a pair of 14" double insulated mountain extremes but they're just too warm so I decided to keep them for ice fishing and treestand hunting. I then bought a pair of the...

    Virginia Public Land Bucks

Nice to see bucks like these are still running around. Congrats to you! I lived and hunted in Botetourt County for many years prior to moving west 6 years ago. Nobody I knew ever hunted the national forest but I had a lot of fun hunting there as well as Grayson and Craig Counties. Sure, you had...

    Favorite western towns

Every time I drive through Baker City, OR with the Blue Mountains in the background, the Wallowas to the NE, the Owyhees to the south, and Hells Canyon plus the entire state of Idaho in the foreground, I think now here is a place I could put down roots. If you hunt Chukars as well as big game...

Hunt Pay to Play Timber Land in WA

I assume you mean SW? I don't for the reasons mentioned above. There's decent blacktail hunting on public land and with "pick your weapon" seasons I prefer to hunt archery in other states and focus on elk in the WA national forests, mainly the Gifford Pinchot.

    youth caliber

I picked up a 260 rem several years ago on a whim and haven't looked back. Other than a 54cal flintlock, it's the only rifle I hunt with anymore. I can't imagine a better all-purpose caliber for the lower 48. Light recoil, accurate, shoots flat, hits hard...

    Elk Pastrami

The recipe is similar to how I make duck bacon. I'll bet it tastes as good as it looks.

    Canning venison or antelope?

I add nothing to mine, same way I've done it for 30+ years. Just add meat to within 1" of the top, slightly tamp down to avoid air pockets. I mostly use shank and tougher cuts of meat which have a lot of flavor compared to larger muscle pieces. This way I can season however I want depending on...

Rinella's Bear Adventure on Afognak Island

    Late season hunting boots

How warm are the Hunter II's? Like ice fishing in single digits warm? Or, still hunting in single digits and you'll be ok warm? They look plenty stout but 400grams of thinsulate doesn't seem like that much.
