Seems like a reasonable concern. All it takes is 1 A-hole to ruin your trip. It's something I think about every time I walk away from my truck. I've never had problems in ID and you don't see broken glass in obvious trail head parking lots like I see all the time here in WA and OR. I'm sure it...
I’m headed out in an hour or so. My pack weight for a 7 day hunt will be similar. I never plan for the pack out though. I’d rather haul out a comfortable load and head back for a 2nd — even if it means an extra 12-16 mile round trip.
I did that hike 6 or 7 years ago. I don't recall it being very difficult. I did see 2 pine martens (likely the same one twice) which surprised me. Pretty cool place and well worth the effort.
I don't use a traeger but I do similar temps except that I start low at 130F and bump up 20F every hour until I get to 190F then hold until internal reaches 160. I use 1lb, 2" casings and it takes me probably 5-6 hours at least. Make sure you ice bath when you finish.
Chiggers and sitting on old/rotten logs go hand in hand. My personal experience with chiggers back in Virginia though tell me that's probably not what these are. You end up with little crusty sores that itch for weeks afterwards. They usually congregate around the waist -- especially under your...
I've been working out details for a trip to Prince of Wales Island driving from Washington State via the ferry out of Prince Rupert next August or the year after (if anyone has done this or is interested feel free to PM me). It occurred to me I'd be driving through a lot of great deer and...
That should be a great hunt. I spent last weekend backpacking on the SE side of the ONP/ONF scouting for the September deer hunt. Some of the most spectacular country in the lower 48. Welcome.
I lost track of this issue years ago. Back around 1993 while I was going to UNC, I spent a month traveling around the state with a group of Veterinary students. The Museum of Life and Science in Durham had a small group of captive Red Wolves so we spent a morning capturing the pups with what was...
I've gone to using 12x50's on a tripod 90% of the time when I expect to sit and glass for hours on end. As someone pointed out above, "glassing" thru a spotter sucks. Sometimes I carry 8x42's and a tripod if I expect to alternate between moving and sitting. It's a compromise of sorts. Typically...
High Cascade Buck (119a) for me. Nada for elk/pronghorn. Now waiting on Washington and Idaho. If all goes as planned, I'm shooting for a 3 state Blacktail-Whitetail-Mule Deer trifecta plus OTC archery elk.
If you do consider an extended warranty, look carefully at what it covers. Most of the big ticket items in a camper -- AC, fridge, H2O heater, awning, etc -- are covered by individual manufacturer warranties. Even the undercarriage will have a separate warranty.
Also, realize the the number...
When I was going to school at UNC a good friend invited me to join them for a similar hunt in eastern NC. I was skeptical to say the least but as a poor college student contemplating road kill this seemed like a way to fill the freezer if nothing else. It turned out to be oddly similar to...
Funny how that works. The blacktails I’ve taken from the cascades are hands down my favorite. The few mule deer I’ve eaten were indistinguishable from whitetail.
Elk hunting has a steep learning curve. A lot of people may disagree but if you're a run and gun turkey caller you've already got a significant advantage over most beginners. I'd suggest hit CO with an OTC tag and take in the experience then build from there.
Not me but I lived in Botetort county, VA for years and still own a cabin in Warren county, PA. I used to hunt the late ML religiously every year in both states. I haven’t been back to hunt either in 6 years and it’s slowly driving me crazy. Good luck. Feel free to PM me about VA, I spent a lot...
My Iphone GPS is more accurate than my Garmin, even in airplane mode. The Garmin is garbage for recording total distance and elevation gain -- my etrex 20 doesn't even record total elevation gain but if it did, it has too many outliers to be accurate. The Garmin does, however, use a chip...
