Advise from a southerner to a westerner on hunting

Years ago I went to visit a buddy who was living in Mississippi working on his wildlife biology masters. One of the guys we were hanging around with at the work center asked me where I was from. "Mt Airy, North Carolina", I said. He says nonchalantly, "oh, a yankee, ...". I guess it's all a...

Thoughts on the Alaska Airlines credit card?

"They are quite simply the best airline by a long shot." I don't disagree with this but it puzzled me why they partnered with American Airlines -- quite simply the worst airline by a long shot...

    Rotator cuff surgery

I had a SLAP repair along with rotator cuff repair in mid-December several years ago. I was able to bow hunt elk the following September but just barely. In fact, I wasn't able to draw a bow back at all until maybe 10 days before the trip. It took about a year until my shoulder felt totally back...

    Alaska drive in hunt

I'm in the same boat somewhat except I may end up moving to AK. I've got 3-4 years until I can consider retiring. Even then, I'll likely use a transporter for moose and hopefully sheep just to avoid hunting from the road system. I've looked at driving to Tok, AK from here in Washington --...

    BHA Pint Night, Portland, OR

Hmmm, I just might. I completely overlooked this. 6:30, right?

    Anyone seen the Rivian vehicles?

The 230 mile range version has a 105 kWh battery pack. A 2000 watt Honda generator has an output of ~1.6 kW. So...I'm guessing roughly 2-3 days to fully charge a drained system.

    Anyone seen the Rivian vehicles?

I've been using my Dodge Cummins as my daily driver ever since my kids started driving. A couple years ago I noticed you could lease a Nissan Leaf for ~$200 a month. We have charge stations at work and I figured adding a couple solar panels at home would equal free fuel. It turns out most of the...

    Pennsylvania Sunday Hunting

I left PA 30 years ago but still co-own a camp near Sheffield that I hunt every few years -- mostly during late Flintlock season. The camp culture has been on the decline for years. Still, I'm sure local VFW's and volunteer Fire Dept's are probably dreading the Saturday move since those were...

    Question on backcountry food

FWIW, I try to average about 125 calories/ounce final weight. That's about 2000cal/lb. Many Mountain House meals, for example, only provide ~100 cal/ounce before you add in the package wt. Pasta/tortillas can be even less. I generally offset weight from less calorie dense carbs with higher...

    Venison Bolognese

Looks fantastic to me. I’ve been craving Bolognese since I watched this “tutorial” a couple weeks ago: https://youtu.be/F8PFz0gPMo4

    Wyoming resident applications?

Thanks, that's what I get for day dreaming at work. Now that I'm looking closer, the numbers make more sense.

    Wyoming resident applications?

I'm familiar with the NR application process for Antelope but I'm curious how the resident process differs. I never looked at it until now and I can't figure it out. No preference points, correct? When I glanced at the 1st choice resident applicants for a few of the S central units the number of...

Any one use mountain climbing boots like Scarpa or Mammut?

I use a pair of La Sportiva’s for actual mountain climbing. I have narrow feet and these fit well plus handle crampons well. IMO they’re too stiff for hunting though some may desire that. I prefer GTX trail runners with gaiters for hunting until the snow gets over 4-5 inches. La Sportiva Trangos...

    Favorite coffee while backpack hunting

I got some coffee beans in the "green" from a neighborhood coffee roaster one time and roasted them in a skillet over a campfire. After they cooled, I crushed them up with the butt of my knife and boiled them cowboy style. The results were exceptional, if I do say so myself. I imagine the old...

GSP Puppy - The Adventure Begins

My GSP has the same head splash. Pretty cool. He's far and away my favorite dog ever but easily the most destructive. He's a little over 3 years old and I'm still waiting for him to grow up and stop eating my leather gloves and chewing the handles off my tools.

    Brat or kielbasa recipe

I really like this Kielbasa recipe. It works well with a 70/30 mix of elk and pork: https://www.theblackpeppercorn.com/2011/08/smoked-kielbasa/ My go to Bratwurst is a Nurnberger-style that uses only 5 ingredients (salt, pepper, mace, nutmeg, marjoram). I'll post the recipe later when I'm home...

    DIY drop camp

You didn't indicate your reason for this but if backpacking in/out is the problem I'd suggest looking at Llama's. I've used them twice and prefer them to horses. They're really easy to manage and can pretty much go anywhere you can and possibly more.
