Wow, that's a tough one. The PNW and Alaska have great fishing. High country in the Rockies is unbeatable as well. Oregon Inlet Gulf Stream fishing off the outerbanks is definitely my favorite...
I grew up in western PA and wrestled through high school. When I started school at Edinboro a few years later after a stint in the army, their program was just starting to build into something special but all those smaller PA schools like Lehigh, Clarion, and Lock Haven had outstanding programs...
North Carolina class of '93 here. I've got Heels over Nova for vindication, 77-72. Duke chokes against Baylor. My wife and I met while working at Duke, she thinks that alone should make me a Duke fan. She'll never understands my contempt for the Blue Devils...
I'm a flintlock guy, always have been but I do own 1 Hawken percussion that I inherited. It depends on your motivation. I like flintlocks for the historical period they represent. They require a certain commitment to detail but I've found them to be reliable once you understand the do's and...
I've built a couple Flintlocks but I can't speak to the quality of traditions. Track of the Wolf has some nice offerings with quality parts. American Longrifles forum has all the information you could ever want and a lot of good builders hang out there as well. http://www.americanlongrifles.com/
I was wondering why the .338mag wasn't getting much love but I see it's making an appearance now. I've only shot 1 once and didn't enjoy it at all but it seems like it would be more popular on a big game thread. Anyways, I'm currently using a .260rem stainless here in the PNW and have no need...
Shooting chukars is the least of my concerns. Dog work is my focus. Grouse hunting sucked this year and I only got 4 days to hunt chukars. The last thing I want to do is over stress a bunch of starving birds but if I can find chukars in relatively snow free terrain I'm all in. Sounds unlikely...
Any chukar areas in OR/ID that aren't smothered in snow and ice right now? I'd really like to get my 15 month old GSP on some birds before season ends. Judging from the weather reports and highway shut downs around Baker City, it sounds like that whole region is a mess.
It's a minor point but "Wilderness Area" is not specific to USDA nor DOI. There are Wilderness areas on BLM lands and there are Wilderness areas on NF lands. DOI (BLM/NP/USFWS) administrates over 73 million acres according to the Wilderness Preservation ACT while USDA (NF) administrates ~36...
"i'm not really a big fan of dogs or bait"
I grew up in PA and probably would have had the same opinion 30 years ago if pressed to give an answer. Back then it was a 3-day free-for-all where you could shoot sows and cubs. The last year I bear hunted in PA, I heard a cub bawling every few...
I listened to the segment on NPR this morning on the way in. Well done in my opinion and hopefully this will get the issue into more of a mainstream discussion. I also belong to a couple northwest hiking forums and 1 mountain climbing club. It's been puzzling to me that PLT gets mentioned in...
I've got one in 260 remington. I repainted the stock with krylon camo paint and added an Uncle Mikes mountain sling. Along with a lightweight Nikon 3x9-40 BDC it comes it at about 6.5lbs total and can do anything I ask of it. I got it mostly for hunting rainy weather blacktails here in WA and OR.
Found a 58 cal minie ball (circa 1860's) embedded in some exposed dirt on Potts Mtn in SW VA while turkey hunting some years back. I've always wondered if it was related to this: http://ourvalley.org/gen-hunters-occupation-of-new-castle-county-feels-wars-harshness/
I also found part of an old...
That's awesome. I've got 4 days off this week including the weekend but with single digit highs I'm not sure if the 6hr drive to SE WA is gonna happen. Sure is tempting though. My GSP is only a year old and really needs the experience. Our 2 day trip to chukar land a few weeks ago resulted in...
I've used all of these at one time or another. If you have a p/u, I'd be looking at a slide in truck camper. That's what I use now. Only a tent is more versatile but they are a PITA if you are going somewhere for only 1-2 nights which I do all the time. I rarely use our travel trailer anymore...
