I like the Mid to Heavy "conventional" bullets also, because they work pretty well. However, the lighter weight monos just change the whole paradigm, IMHO. Not too light, but a 180 mono in a 300 Mag is flat shooting, hits hard, and likely to completely penetrate the marjority of shots! Are...
I loaded the 200 NAB over a wad of Retumbo for a 300 RUM, gift for my SIL. He killed a big cow a tad over 440yds with it, blew chunks out the other side, he said. Its a good looking bullet. I have more experience with the older Barnes 180 XBT from a 300 Win Mag. I think the newer TTSX has more...
Lots of reports of 7mm-08/Barnes 120 TTSX and 308/Barnes 130 TTSX shooting through elk on broadsides....take your pick. :) I've owned one 7mm-08 but several .308s. I have neither now, but if I did it again, I would do the 308/Barnes 150TTSX on elk myself,
20 yrs ago, I used both H4831 and R22 with the Barnes 180 XBT. Back in the Fall, I played with a new Mesa 300WM and R17/150 TTSX and R23/H4831sc/200 PT. I have a recent, new Bergara B14 300WM that I will also start out with R17/150 TTSX but with R26/ 175 LRX. I will probably work up some loads...
One of my hunting partners here in Utah has used the same Browning BLR since 1970, in .308! He uses 150gr Corlokt ( factory) and has killed scores of elk/mule deer/antelope and one wild Bison down in the Henry Mountains. So, nothing wrong with a .308, can be a very good choice for you.
For me, growing up in East Tx, it took me 20yrs to get a shot at a whitetail over 90 yds! That one was on an old pipeline ROW, 276 long steps! First, I thought it was only 220yds or so, ha and (2) I had been practicing for months with that particular .280 shooting off hand at 200yds. I was in a...
I like shooting sticks and from the sitting position. I can shoot prone w/o a rest, but if I had time, prone from a pack is sweet! Its just that I have seldom, seldom, shot from prone. In the mountains, I can usually get to a rock or tree for support. In the prairies, the grass has been too high...
HeyThere- I had a favorite uncle who loved to hunt, but never gave more than a passing thought about his ammo, ha. As long as it said "30-06" he knew it would fit in his Mod 742! ha He once showed me a handful of rounds, and they were everything from Match Handlods a friend gave him to 180gr Ptd...
My SIL picked up a used Tikka T3 Lite in 7mm Rem Mag one year. It was light and I went with him to zero it. he works alot ( that's one reason I "gave away" my daughter to him! :)) so bought some HSM ammor with the 168 Bergers. That thing shot like a varmint rifle, and was surprisingly very easy...
Hunting/shooting is a very personal choice. You don't have to apologize for your choice on anything that is "legal". If others don't like it, they are free to use "their" choice. Just smile and go on and enjoy your hunt. If we are fortunate enough to hunt enough, long enough, we all learn what...
I have not used the 30-06 that much in recent past, my last one ( a 24" CDL) liked a case full of R22 and the 200PT for almost 2700, but it shot like a varmint rifle! ha I loaned it to a friend who used it on a big hog, head shot. Now, at 25yds, the bullet made a 3/4 inch hole (all the way...
Hey Quack, I hear you, but I never had a 300WM hurt my teeth, ha. I seem to shoot them just fine. The only rifles that "hurt me" have been (#1) my FIL's Sears Ted Williams Mod 70 knockoff in 30-06, brutal! (2) an 80s Model 70 338WM I worked up loads for a friend for. Horrible. (3) A Weatherby...
I worked up a load of 60gr/R26 and 160 Nosler (in my last .270W) that went 2930fps into .90".....22" barrel! I used to hunt with a Mod 700 BDL 7mm Rem Mag and never got over 2950 with it and the 160 Nosler PT, 24" barrel (back in the 80s)! They should work the same, one would think? ha
I prefer a .270W/130ish mono as "my" minimum on elk, thats just a personal opinion. The "mainstream" 7mm Rem Mag and 30-06 are fine too, thats just me. However, I like the Mediums too ( 338/35 Cals) but "overall" I find I like the 300WM "best" for my elk hunting (or similar sized game). I've...
A monometal through the shoulders is very effective, put behind the shoulder they can run some usually. If you aim halfway up aligned with the "front edge" of the leg, you get whats known as the "*Thoracic Autonomic Plexis", fancy for "big arteries above the heart and double lungs", maybe some...
Two ways to go about it (for a .270 or similar, to keep in context)...fast & flat (high velocity/expansion/damage) or heavy/slower ( for penetration & damage)
The fast & flat help hit where you aim, and for elk, the 130s have to be either Premium ( or stout enough) to open up with shock & awe)...
Update: I just made the decision to stick with the Hodgdon Extremes, or other known temp stable powders, ha. No use tormenting my OCD selk! Thanks for the replies guys!
I've had 338 Federal, 338/280, 338 Wm, 340W and 338 RUM. I liked them all but the 338/280. this was back when about the only brass was the nickle plated Remington brand. I had split necks, uneven case mouths sizing up and FF with COW. I needed the headstamp as I was close to going on a planned...
I grew up where semis were very popular. Mod 742s, it seemed mine and every 30-06 chambered were jammomatics. The 308 and 6mm Remington were just fine, and very accurate too. I bought a BAR 7mm Mag when I got out of the Army, 1973 and while it was accurate and the trigger was good, it was very...
I have some WW cases with Hornady 130sp and some Nosler cases with 129LRX loaded. I am going to try to work up to 59.5 R19. I did find/order some R16 and some RWS brass ( just for grins) and will most likely use R16 for the stability. Utah can get some pretty good temp swings in Fall. I've seen...
