Hey you can even get away with grazing cattle on the wilderness lands. The warden said one outfitter hasn't killed an elk in the wilderness in 10 years but is still in business.
There are elk in that unit no doubt. You'll see hunters but big bulls get shot every year in some weird heavily pressured areas. You'll definitely be looking for those small nasty pockets the elk will go do or try to let other hunters push the elk to you. Good luck on your hunt!
My Thermarest NeoAir has been amazing from a durability standpoint. I've slept in rocks, dirt, sand, my truck and out backpacking in hot/cold over multiple seasons and it's running like a champ. Now I did get a Big Agnes which I sleep a bit better on but I've went through two of these pads...
Boy the therma cell doesn't even cut it if you're moving. Spray down in bug spray and don't change your clothes for a few days. Sure you stink but you can't hunt out there and not sweat!
MtnWest that's definitely a fair point for some ranchers out there. There will always be good ranchers and bad ranchers. Fortunately we've gotten to spend time with some families that have a very grounded viewpoint on what the capacity of the landscape is both for their cows but also for the...
Just wanted to share with you guys a coyote hunting film we just released called Tooth & Fang. We already OK'd posting the film with Randy.
Tooth & Fang takes a closer look at why the management of coyotes is necessary across the West. Filmed over the course of three years this film...
If it's one or the other I'd go with the GPS. More durable, covers the entire state and batteries generally last much longer. I like to use both when hunting but definitely have had the app bug out or not show my cached layers on certain hunts. Satellite imagery can also be misleading...
Any model of FoxPro should work fine down to at least 0. Their wolf sounds are not that great and voice howling is far better if that's the route your going. Expect to sit on stand at least 30 minutes if not 45-60 for wolves. That's what the government trappers I've talked to say anyhow...
We have had the chance to use a production sample of the new Metcalf with the Guide Light frame this fall. The pack is right in line with what you've come to expect from Mystery Ranch and performed great on four bull elk, a whole antelope and recently a mule deer buck. The new frame is...
It could have easily fell out of his pickup truck when he got in or out of his rig. I've had it happen before but was able to go back and find it in the snow. I think putting up a small post at the trailhead would be the best way to find the owner. After I dropped mine I make sure to only...
I still can't believe how many times I hear the same old "I didn't have a wolf tag and had one at 30 yards." Why the hell wouldn't you have a tag? If you hunt deer and elk you should be required to have a wolf tag.
High, dry and cool otherwise it's straight back to the cooler or freezer. Meat is the number 1 priority when you shoot an animal. Creek is only a short term solution to get the meat cold unless you have waterproof bags to keep it dry and cool.
I personally like the no points system they currently have in place. Every year is a new year. I just took the survey and hope that something good comes of it. Everyone always has some opinion on these issues but you'll never make everyone happy. Fortunately there are enough great OTC hunts...
