I always feel fine carrying a .45 1911. Most of the guys I know do carry higher capacity 9's though. I would just carry whatever you are comfortable with. This debate has been going on for ages.
I would try to scout and maybe hunt fields and ponds where you know they are at. Also, don't be shy about asking to hunt private. Every time I've been out in the Dakotas snow goose / duck hunting I've received a lot more permission than denials.

No, I agree. I just have to plan my work vacations a year in advance. So I would have to plan those weeks off in december for the chance I do get a tag the following fall. Also helps that the ND rifle weeks are roughly the same as in MN so I am hunting either way.

Man I feel you. I did end up just quitting cold turkey. My throat and lip just couldnt bare it anymore. Cold turkey was horrendous for about a month. Really hope it works out for you!
