Ok, so 3 of the four Rams looked good to me and one seemed bigger than the others. I didn't see the fourth Rams head, but I didn't need to, at least no immediately. I slipped off the bank again and grabbed my rifle and my pack. The Rams were about 1200 yards up the draw... The bottom 300-400...
So, back to camp. This is bull crap, I'll pack up and cruise up river, glass for 29 miles if I have to. Camp wherever I am come dark.
Got everything wrapped up and stowed in the boat. Ok, let's go look around camp and up on the knob where the spotting scope had sat for a few days along with a...
The ridge 2 1/2 miles up where the sheep were Monday night.
This is the foldy, breaks country off the river. Each of those little "folds" are actually chasms, damn near crevasses like!
I stood on one ridge and looked across to the same level and top of the next ridge... I thought, "300...
So three days of glossing and hiking... And no Rams that held my attention. This brought me to Monday night. As the sun sat, I caught a herd of sheep moving up a ridge about three miles up river. My spotting scope couldn't get quite close or light or clear enough today ell me what they were, but...
How come as I stand and cut and wrap this beautiful beast my back is killing me, but when I packed gunnery pound loads to the boat there wasn't a bit of pain...
Ugh
Anyhow, the back strap fried in butter with a little garlic salt is DIVINE!
On day two, I made it to my camp spot. 29 miles from my truck... No upstream travel allowed for a few days! Rams everywhere... It'd be easy to stalk a big 195er with my bow...
Oh wait. Wow, in the first three days I only saw one ram group and the biggest was probably about 172. It was fun to...
I won't drag this out horribly long...
When I put in the river, all I could do was basically idle downstream... Upstream travel didn't open for 4 days... And downstream at no wake speed was only ok Thursday through Saturday. It made for a quiet trip! In the first 4 days, I saw two canoes...
So after a couple days dinking around off the road, I decided to hit the river. A damn good friend basically offered up his taxi services, then couldn't go due to work... And offered me the boat anyways! I've been on and driven jets forever, but I was still a bit nervous about taking someone...
My overall plan was to scout as much as possible this summer (turned out about 6 days), talk to everyone I could, then basically hunt about ten days per month if need be. The horror stories of hunting the breaks in November that a few people described, did give me some incentive to get it done a...
Yeah... Without the river, I wouldn't have been there. Without the river, the Breaks wouldn't be there. I was happy to be able to squeeze it in...
Speaking of the river... Ahhh.... What a joy. I left the ramp at 6pm several days before power boats were allowed on the river, so me and the 40...
I promise I'm not being an ass trying to drag this out. I'm psyched to tell the story and post more pics but I've got about 15 other things on my to do list! So, just as a disclaimer, I'll probably slowly add to the thread over the next few days since I can't go elk hunting this weekend!
Here's...
When I get a minute to tell the story the title will make more sense.
Regardless, it was a fun summer leading up to sheep season. In a way I wish I still had a tag and was heading up again, but I guess when it happens it happens.
I'll add some more pics and more story later today!
174.
Ugh... I am sooo nervous about seeing something like that right away, along with smaller Rams and pulling the trigger!
Don't get me wrong, beautiful old ram... He looks awesome...
But I sure aim to find something 10 inches bigger.
Can you buy a tag P? After getting a ram a few years ago? Just curious. That would be cool if you could.
How big are the biggest rams in the unit? I might buy one....
