Do you carry a pistol for bear when elk hunting???
When rifle hunting I don't carry a handgun as I'm not proficient enough with it to offset the danger I'd be to my hunting partners under the stress and chaos of an attack. OIL Antelope taxidermist
Know of one in north central Indiana that does excellent work. He only does shoulder mounts and wait times are right around a year or so last time I checked. If you decide to bring it back east it wouldn't be as far to pick it up when done. It's called Woodside Taxidermy- elkfanatic

50 or 45 caliber inline?
.50 cal is minimum for elk in Colorado for elk. If not interested in chasing elk .45 works well for deer size critters.- elkfanatic

Colorado OTC - How bad is it
It all depends on where you go. I've been at trailheads that were loaded with trucks and camps everywhere, but most only ventured about a mile in. Suppressed hunting is the way to go. Saves your and your hunting partners hearing,allows you to hear bullet impact, and possibly more likely to get a second shot in. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Got one form four can, and working on getting two form one cans.- elkfanatic
