Like last year, it took me 9 days in the woods to get a bear, and just like last year, I got lucky on September 1. But in past years, I’ve hunted at 6,500’ elevation in the Sierras. This year, I focused on 3,500’ instead. I prefer the higher elevations because it’s cooler and prettier (with more...
That’s the tag. It was rolled up before, and kept its shape on the ear. California requires that bears be tagged immediately (even before pictures). My question is this: how do they expect the tag to stay attached throughout the skinning/quartering and pack out? In my case, that was a six hour...
Some of you know that I already punched my bear tag during archery season (posted here), but I had such a close encounter with another bear, that I’m considering it my second bear of the year (and I got video!).
I hunted a new area last week (for deer), and saw a ton of both deer and bear...
Hi Everyone,
It’s been awhile since I posted here, so I thought I’d tell you all about my fall archery bear from early September here in California:
I had spent eight days out in the woods in search of bears, and again woke up early for my ninth day in the field. I had come across a number of...
Thx, 375. I did seal it initially. Didn't help.
It's not a big deal to me, as I have many skulls. Just a warning to others.
I now macerate, which is time consuming, but doesn't damage the skull.
Good point, nturpin. Your comment made me look at the pic above. It looks like there's a sleeve at the base of the broadhead that shouldn't be there. This is what it should look like when closed:
The broadheads seem closed in buried tissue after you pull it out. They won't stay open as you pull it.
The only way to tell is the wound, which you have verified as problematic. Thus, your broadheads failed.
I've had good experiences with them. They slice bone like butter, and perform great...
What do you all know about this guy?

I recently dropped by the Kuiu store in Dixon, CA, and tried on all their rain jackets. I was amazed how noisy they were. If you're rifle hunting, it's probably not an issue. Archery hunting is another story. I left empty-handed. I wish there was a brushed face on the jackets.
Sometimes your back won't tolerate heavy loads. Ive been there.
I've used the aluminum cart pictured below (made by guide gear, likely in China). It's lightweight, and I've rigged my mountain bike rear rack to hold it when folded up. I use it all winter long to haul my waterfowl gear and...
That really stinks. You were definitely shorted, but not necessarily intentionally. Assume that there was an honest error, and see what the butcher does from there. I hope you get more meat in your freezer as a result!
