The archery season here in California is in full swing, and after many years, I finally nailed one with my bow (plenty in the past with shotgun). The grouse in my area don’t let you get close. This one was at 33 yards. I’m looking forward to a grouse meal soon! Also nailed a very small Mt...
Jryoung is correct. See below for the regulation. Always read the regs yourself, though. Don't take my word for it, or anyone else's.
(h) Archers may not use or possess a firearm while in the field engaged in archery hunting during an archery season or while hunting during a general season...
This new meadow I was hunting surprised me. I’ve never really observed bears eating pine nuts, but not only were these bears using this food source, they were fixated on it (https://youtu.be/oge6QGLb7r4). This meadow only contained a handful of pine trees, but each one had tons of bear scat and...
I was hunting a meadow in the Sierra Nevada recently, and could hear the sound of branches breaking down the hill. I hoped to find bears foraging for termites and grubs in downed trees, but had a hard time pinpointing the location. Then I realized the sound was coming from above. I looked up to...

If you think you’ll need to get the animal out whole, don’t hunt far from roads. I’ve killed a bear every year during the past six years, and all were within a third of a mile from a road. Two were archery. Bears go where there’s food, and in my experience, it doesn’t improve your chances to...
Interesting thread. I, too, noticed the many north of the border attacks in that article. Like the others have noted, the black bears I’ve encountered are scared to death of me.
I wonder if bears in rural Canada have less fear of humans because of how infrequent their encounters are. I’ve...
Works great, but I usually grind 10-15 pounds of meat at a time. For me, it's not easy to do much more than that (logistically), but if I did, I'd get a bigger grinder.
I’d love to spot and stalk one of these, but never have! Of the past 5 successful years, 4 bears were taken using a sit and wait strategy. The fifth was still hunting. I hunt the dense forests of the Sierra Nevada, and don’t even take optics with me. They’re useless where I hunt. Fire...
That bear was not very big; well under 200 lbs. Over the years, I’ve learned the curse of shooting a big bear when hunting solo, so smaller is my preference. I generally shoot whatever crosses my path, though.
I don't hunt Siskiyou, but of 30 California counties where bears were taken in past years, Siskiyou is in the top 5 for bear harvest. I'd say you have a good chance.
