Finding bear in California in the Sierras this November/December?

It starts to get tough this time of year, but many hunters start focusing on bears when deer season ends. At this point, the berries are gone and the food sources are more scattered. You already know that acorns are a good place to focus your efforts, and you would do better to concentrate on...

Draft Black Bear Conservation Plan for California available for comment until June 14, 2024

The State of California has produced a Draft Black Bear Conservation Plan, which will fundamentally change how it manages black bears (see link below). The plan will change how California determines if bear populations are healthy. Instead of using bear tooth aging to establish population...

    The New Cam Hanes Flick

There’s no doubt that Cam is an athlete and a skilled hunter. But it’s hard to watch someone who idolizes themself like he does. We are all prone to do this to some extent, but he puts in on display so prominently, it’s hard to stomach. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, a...

Is it safe to shoot squirrels with a .22?

Lots of hunters use a .22 for squirrel, but is that safe? Where does that bullet go when misses occur at squirrels way up in a tree? We all know that shooting a skylined elk is ill-advised because the backdrop is unknown. How is that different than shooting straight up in the air? Just some...

    Loan for hunting

Debt is a burden. It is not something I would ever consider for entertainment purposes. Contrary to some posts above, it isn’t shrewd to die with debt. This can have cascading effects on family members and someone is always left holding the bag at the end of the day. If you can’t afford a hunt...

    Turkey Hunter Interactions

I once had a couple of hunters walk about 20 yards from where I was set up for turkeys, oblivious to my presence. I was not using decoys and had a gopro mounted on a short tripod in front of me. One of the guys started to raise his shotgun at me, and I yelled, "Don't even think about it!" He...

Anybody else excited for Topgun: Maverick?

I don’t understand how people can like this movie. It’s terrible. The acting is bad, the storyline is derivative, the editing is stilted. I couldn’t finish it.

    Truck Topper: Leer vs A.R.E.

+1 on this. I had a cab height on my last truck for 17 years and constantly wished I had a mid rise. It feels like you have a ton of room, but many items don’t fit in that narrow space. That, and you’re constantly hitting your head on the ceiling when you’re in the bed. I now have a mid rise and...

    Holidays and in-laws

MIL and SIL spent four days with us over Christmas. SIL could not stop coughing. She said she had a sore throat before coming. She would sit at our kitchen island and hack up a lung as we prepared food. At one point, I told her she needed to do something about that cough. She got offended and...

Trail cams on public land: how is that ok?

For me, trail cameras really only serve as a confidence boost to verify that animals are indeed using the trail I suspected. Cameras rarely tell you something you already didn't know. That is, you placed them on an obvious trail, and low and behold, the camera found game on the obvious trail...

Anybody Buying Yet? Where’s the Bottom?

Right. So, if your high 3-year salary was 100,000, and you put in 30 years, you would get $30,000/year in pension payments. This is not meant to be a livable pension without a 401k, but even this small amount is remarkable in today's world. For those that begrudge this pension, you have two...

As others have said, those grotesquely obese bears are obviously consuming human refuse, whether from farms or elsewhere.

    Intermuscular fat?

As others have said, bear makes amazing roasts, and you don’t really need intramuscular fat for them to be good. Bear tissue just seems to break down differently than ungulate muscle tissue. If you’re doing a roast for ungulates, it really needs to be medium rare, like a beef rib roast.

    Trapper Cabin Ideas and Daydreaming

My wife and I had a 1,100 ft cabin built 14 years ago, pictured below in the Sierra Nevada. We love it. We don’t regret our decision at all. The two biggest cons are maintenance and stationary nature of the home. As for maintenance, we apply a latex stain every three years. We have not had any...
