I would venture to guess that Aaron Ralston would be pert near an expert at self tourniquet/amputation. Incredible feat of survival by this dude, though, I have heard that he has alienated many friends due to his lack of "common sense" when he plays in the backcountry!
TacticalCombatCasualtyCareHandbook gives some good information. I am a former SAR, Ski Patrol,EMT-B, with military training. The "Golden Hour" in the backcountry is often shot to craps. In the end it is still "life or limb" and permeating one's brain with first aid information is never a waste...
I am not in herd management around here on the farm. I drop any deer that I can make a clean kill on with my bow. The farmer who lets me hunt his land(formerly my relatives) is appreciative for it and the meat feeds my family! Deer are overrunning this area of the coulee region!
I like a few or 3 to 4 big triangular bandages , but I prefer big silk scarves, which can be used as a tourniquet, a drive on rag (around the neck) and a bandage. A good pair of trauma scissors and a suture kit!
I wear a 15 narrow, never wore the Packer style boot either, I also wore logging style boots that I could hike all day in if necessary. I bought oversized stirrups for my saddle , which fit my winter boots mo better!
The beetle kill has ruined quite a bit of the hunting and livelihood for many. From the reports I get the guides and packers have one animal with nothing but chainsaws and fuel. It is a chore, and it can get dangerous. This old former Park Service worker I used to drink a beer with, got dead by...
We used electric from time to time , but our big camps all had corrals next to water. They had to be approved by the Forest Service, and they were quite a bit of work, but the horses were better off for it. There is always a pecking order with horses and every now and again "Butch" had to spend...
Horses are the bees knees, as long as they are someone else's headache when the hunt is over! JK! I worked for outfitters off and on for 20 years in between concrete and ski patrol. Was blessed to have worked with some mighty fine mountain stock! I learned from professionals so I was able to...
In my past experience , I found cow elk to have much better personal hygiene than the bulls and the field dressing and quartering was much cleaner than a nasty old bull! We were spoiled then, working for outfitters with a whole passel of good mountain stock, getting the meat out of a nasty...
I cringe to think about a handshake outcome anymore. Covid kind of put a new spin on that one! This mouthy young man on a job we were supporting, training NG troops, offered his hand to me one day. I thought I was going to break every bone in his hand! WTF!
I am going to pick up a few extra doe tags for here and Monroe county. I am going to hit McCoy for archery for at least a few days. Some really cool terrain over there.
I go hunting! My family would not even give it a thought if I were doing what I enjoyed! Women have been giving birth for centuries without the need for my presence!
