The ammo manufactures are to busy making millions of rounds for Biden's 87,000 new "catcha screw ya agents".
Good thing I loaded over 600 30-06 rounds back in 1966.
The moose fire was not in unit 30. I would hunt around Thanksgiving or later. Snow will not be a problem for access at that time.
This is the 15th and too early for the big bulls down low. In another ten days I will be watching herds of elk in unit 30 from my house.
I shot a big whitetail buck quartering to me and the Sierra HP Game King went from one end to the other and never opened, just a little flat on one side. It was recovered next to hip bone in back leg. Never shot another of those bullets! Just wondering if this could have happened in your case.

In 1959 I bought a Sako 222, in 1960 I bought a Sako 244, in 1964 I bought a Sako 30-06, all new at the time. In the last 40 years I have mainly shot the 30-06. On occasion I have shot coyotes with with the other two.
I hunt with a scoped 30-06 Sako and my backup is a 30-06 Remington 760 with a green glow on either side the peep and a red glow dot on the front, also for use in a snowstorm, my favorite time to kill big bulls.
Get a 30-06. It has a wide range of of regular and custom bullet loads and weights which can be found almost anywhere where others may be hard to find in small towns out west. I have shot many elk with my 30-06 I purchased new in 1964 and have never felt the need for more gun.

Yes the header does state Montana, BUT he also wrote " or any area in Missoula" which I took as any area around Missoula. So what elker posted was correct except we all forget a thing now and then as he did when not stating Idaho. No big deal. He was only trying to help with a good place to...
I have found muslin fabric to be the best for game bags and they can be easily made. I have made several sizes that work from moose to whitetail. Cut fabric at home and have a local cobbler sew them up. Some of mine have been used over thirty years and still work like new. Be sure and wash them...
