One well used rifle got me thinking

My brother drew a tag for mule deer and we were successful last weekend. But, this isn't a story about the trip or the harvest. We met another group of hunters at a trail head and one of the more senior guys had an old rifle that stuck in my head. He'd found a lion kill and we were discussing...

Lightest Bestest Tripod For Sitting w/12x Binos Only

Siriu pan head here too and like it a lot. I also have an older vortex high country ball. The lighter vortex under my 15X binos are not as stable in wind. The sirui is. the extra weight isn't noticeable to me in the pack.

One gun/caliber to rule them all?

7rem mag. flat. hits very hard. manageable recoil. .284 ballistics (sectional density and bc for wind/drop). What it isn't: massively over-bored, flavor of the month, shoulder crushing, powder glutton, barrel eater.

    .308win 130gr ttsx ?

Ive been working on a 130 gr ttsx load in my Hows 308 and getting just under 3K fps with IMR 3031. Decent accuracy and haven't used on game yet. The ballistics inside 400 yards is fine for me and deer. My thinking was same as mentioned above with another comment - using copper = go faster if...

Would anyone else care to give praise to the .308 ?

The stats do not lie. It usually sells among the top 3 big game cartridges. Kills effectively when the nut behind the trigger does their job. Isn't the soup dujour or a long range round but is strangely found in most safes by guys who fill freezers. It sucks. I have 2.

What are you guys paying for gas?

In CA now. Gas price is nuts here. Doesn't seem to bother the people around here?!? fwiw, paid $5.89/ga today for mid-grade. Good times.

    .308win and monolithic bullets

I've been working a slow project to develop a CA compliant deer load for my 308. With FC brass and 46 gr IMR 3031 (near max-no pressure signs in my gun - work up in yours) under a 130 gr ttsx, I'm getting 3060 fps out of 22" barrel. JBM calc says >2K FPS and >1.2K ftlbs at 400 yards. That's not...
