Well for once a strategy actually worked. I got a 1st rifle elk tag in a decent unit and a plains muzzleloader deer tag. Colorado bound! Well…. unless I draw something else in the meantime, as I’ve got a few more LE / low odds irons in the fire….
Added a deer point and got a 3rd choice license for my back pocket. Should be able to combine with my chosen elk unit if I draw that too, which would make for a hectic and fun trip west.
This is not accurate. 1st instar (larval) ticks do not have nor transmit Lyme disease. They must feed on an infected animal, typically a mouse, 1st. Those “dust” like, patches of newly hatched almost invisible ticks are thus very annoying (can get everywhere, even between fingers and toes) but...
I have dispatched some animals with a neck shot after an initial shot but for some reason, I’ve never taken one up front and to be honest it never even occurs to me in the moment. Surely I’ve missed opportunities by waiting for broadside. I might need to drum into my head that the shot IS an...
As an out of towner, I am no expert, but still feel from my experiences that its pretty much the norm when seeing a beautifully managed parcel of land to guess correctly that its private ranch, vs seeing a patch of overgrazed wasteland and guessing correctly it is BLM.
I am a little baffled by how little I am
bothered by another across the board unsucc and amused by any NR upset
by it, when so few tags are issued and we all know, or should, going in. Utah just remains a someday, OIL kind of state for me and most others. Good luck to those in the WY elk draw (i...
I helped the odds and withdrew. Quota was cut in my preferred zone so only random was possible. Figured I’d keep accumulating points instead, which allowed me to put in for Utah, since I don’t want to risk drawing both in same year.
Went to the river again locally and saw, cast to, and then hooked (and lost) a large muskie on 8lb test from shore. My heart raced more from this brief encounter than I’ve experienced on many of my western hunts and without the 30 hour drive and thousands spent….
Motivated by this, I went to a...
I have been getting much more back into fishing, local archery, and local muzzleloader than in the recent past. I think its like anything, you “sense” the need for change before you “decide” to change. Then, the change feels natural.
Spending thousands of dollars on app fees in multiple states...
Experienced a bunch of emergences from different broods. Amazing though sometimes irritating experience. Lasts a few weeks.
For all you subsistence types, if you really want to immerse yourself in it, go ahead and hunt some newly emerged and moulted cicadas, rip off their wings and throw in an...
Most of us do!
I continue to bite the bullet in several states, as long as I am getting points and I believe I actually may draw in the long haul. I bailed on NV, its a state I guess I will never hunt. Same with ND. I don’t apply to OR or WA or CA ever, or MT or ID most years. If I ever draw...
