I fully agree. I knew the gentleman who owned this gun and all his family. He and his father were both state senators and they were all big into upland hunting so the gun would no doubt have many stories to relate.
My Grandfather hired out as a guide for Northern hunters who came down to...
Name's Bob Veasy; he also developed several recipes for rust blueing. I've used his products on several guns and they work great as long as you follow the instructions.
Was standing in that very spot some years back, late afternoon, and nearly got slammed several times by cliff swallows working back and forth along the edge of the rim. Those little suckers can smoke.
Where in SC are you? There's a pretty good smith down around Greenwood though I think he's slowly retiring as he just listed a complete collet set for sale on the Mauser Forum. I can get you his particulars if interested. I think there's also one in Florence.
As Elkfever2 mentioned, never burn it! If the smoke and fumes are inhaled it can really screw you up and a bad enough case can kill you.
I used to be totally immune to it but somewhere in my 40's that all went away. Fortunately I don't have much reaction to it but I'm extra careful around it...
Thanks Ben. The stock maker only had one on hand so my choice of grain and figure was pretty limited but the intent was to get a serviceable stock just to get the gun afield again, The original stock is serialized so I glued it back together as best as I could and put some acraglas reinforcement...
I picked up this Elsie from the estate of my wife's old boss for $150 a number of years ago, much the worse for wear. The wrist of the old oil saturated stock was shattered into 6 pieces but I was able to find a 90% butt stock at a stock turner a couple of counties away for $100 which needed the...
My first rifle was a surplus 8mm, bought it for 25 bucks and killed my first two antelope with it as well as several mulies. Never did connect with an elk using it though. Wildcatted it to 8mm-06 and used it as a black timber gun with 220 Sierras before moving back to NC and it downed a number...
Since I'm so far from NM or CO I just buy the 505 brand of roasted Hatch chiles found at some Wal-marts, Sam's Clubs and Costco's. There is a guy who usually trucks in a load to Charlotte along with his roaster and roasts them on site but since I don't always know when he's in town I can't count...
We always kept a Duroc boar and Hampshire sows; made good bacon. The Hampshires were a more docile hog and took good care of their pigs whereas the Duroc sows were more prone to lie on their young if in tight quarters. Glad those days are over!
I bought a 94 Win from my manager some years ago and on our usual Monday morning meet/debrief he hands me a live round for the rifle which he had found at home. I pocketed the round and upon leaving, my first stop was at a nearby nuclear power plant. My business required I go through security...
When the rule of "common usage" replaces a correct word with one of an entirely different and unrelated meaning as a result of laziness or more likely just plain ignorance I have to pick up my lance, mount my steed and continue to tilt this windmill.
As you opined, the last dance may have come and gone with the exception of local whitetails, birds and rabbits. I'll likely never smell the sagebrush or the spicy scent of an aspen grove again, the mustang is still stored awaiting restoration, and in two years I'll join the ranks of the...
I'd suggest a lightly sportered M1917 Enfield, either Rem, Eddystone or Win manufacture. I have one inherited from my uncle which still has the ordinance 30-06 barrel and, while a bit heavy, is the most accurate rifle I own.
