NM is a great state to hunt. One of my favorites because they have a great mix of quality and quantity. However I think they dropped the ball on the NR youth hunts. First they only allow NR youth to get 6% of the tags. Many of the youth elk hunts have 25-30 tags, so that's 2 tags max to NR...
Never met Topgun in person, but will always remember his tireless dedication to helping with the SFW scourge here and elsewhere. He was always on the right side of history. Vaya con dios, Topgun.
But, as an alternative, you can buy a license and points for his mother and/or grandmother for the next several years. Then transfer the tag to him when she draws...
This is what I was thinking! Roulette pays 35 to 1! $1,000 turns into $35,000. That would probably buy a sheep hunt, or a mtn goat and moose hunt at a time of your choosing. The roulette odds of 2.6% are about 10 times better than any sheep hunt, especially as a NR.
It's never too late to...
Thanks Matt. Certainly will take this into consideration when applying. Applied for antelope in NM for 15+ years, never been drawn! Maybe this is the year.
Regarding the antelope changes. Can a NR draw a hunt allocated 10 or fewer tags with the 6% quota? Wondering is those new public land hunts that now are split into 3 or 4 archery and rifle hunts, with 5-10 tags each(like units 13 and 17), will even be available to NR?
Congrats Slayer! Mahomes would have to score more than he has all season for me to pull this off. I got a $25 Cabelas gift card already! Got your name on it!
Just my opinion, but with only 3 days to scout I would probably avoid 27. The top of the rim has plenty of roads mostly where it borders unit 1, not many roads/good access points below the rim where the elk typically spend the winter unless you have horses. The X factor is the weather on that...
1. What style of knife you currently use, and brand if you care to share?
Havalon baracuta, piranta, and Victorinox 5" beef skinner.
2. What you would like to see as upgrades to what you currently use?
Stiffer blades and more blade shapes on Havalon. Beef skinner is awesome as is.
3. Are you...
180 grain TTSX from a .300 Weatherby. Recovered on opposite hide from bull bison shot at 80 yards. Somewhere in the 3050 to 3100 fps range I'm guessing. Performed perfectly, although surprised they didn't pass thru at that range. Tough animals!
I haven't played FF for a few years but would like to try again. As long as the prizes are reasonable, like a new pair or two of smartwool socks or something?
In my mind the ethics questions in this debate is not can you/should you take a shot at 650+ yards across a canyon. I am sure lots of people can make that shot. The ethics question is whether or not the shooter is willing to cross that canyon after the shot to see if there is blood, even if he...
AZGFD has been pushing the lead free ammo for a while on the north rim, supposedly in order to protect the endangered California condor. They even give a free box of lead free ammo to everyone that draws a tag in units 12 and 13. I've received free copper ammo for both my boys on their deer...
You've probably already considered this, but look for ranches with unit wide landowner tags in 21B(and possibly surrounding units) that you can legally access and hunt, or cross to get to landlocked public parcels. I'm not familiar with that unit but have crossed/hunted private ranches that get...
