I want to thank everyone for their wisdom and insight; it is much appreciated!
I think this winter I will probably just camp within a half mile (or whatever the FWP limit is) of the trailhead so that I can test my gear and just get used to long hours sitting in the tent while still being able...
I'm interested in possibly doing some backpack hunting this fall during MT's rifle season, but I have a few questions for you experienced guys:
(1) How did you keep boots and clothes from freezing overnight? Drying out clothes with a fire is a great option, but are there any other techniques...
I think I drew an antelope tag... on the FWP website it says that I have an antelope license under "Items Held", but my three choices are labeled as still pending under "Drawing Results." So does this mean I got a tag?
I am looking to buy a used Eberlestock Blue Widow pack. I'm not picky on the camo pattern and would be very interested to hear from anyone that may have a Blue Widow for sale. Thanks!
I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and wisdom; I have definitely learned a lot on this website and will approach this coming spring season much differently.
This is off-topic from the original post, but has anyone ever read "Montana: Land of Giant Rams" by Duncan Gilchrist...
I've got a DVD called "The Bear Stalker" ; first half consists of guys archery hunting coastal black bears in Alaska while the second half is rifle hunting in Arizona. It's a little over an hour long. I'd be willing to part with it for $10 shipped if you're interested.
Well thank you for your encouragement; I really do appreciate it! I've always been pretty cheap and tight with my money, but I'm learning that there are certain things where you do actually "get what you pay for." By the time I can save up enough money to even consider buying a spotting scope...
I really appreciate everyone's advice and input; at this point I think I am going to hold on to the two pairs of binos I have and just save my money... as I gain experience I think I'll develop a better idea of what's necessary and what's not.
I was under the impression that a lot of guys used...
Here is a little background on me to hopefully help put my question in context:
-I did not grow up hunting and just finished my first season this past fall, so I’m very, very inexperienced.
-I hunt as often as I can and as many species as I can (elk, deer, bear, and wolf so far…hopefully...
I am in the same boat as you; I have been heading out most weekends since the end of the general big game seasons and I have yet to see anything. Since we're talking about hunting wolves I think it's probably ok to share specifics (someone please correct me if I am wrong)... I have looked...
Thanks for the advice. I haven't tried that tactic before so I'll have to give that a shot.
There's almost as much green up on the forested slopes as there is on the more exposed slopes in the areas I have been recently; will glassing slopes become less and less effective as spring/ summer...
I have been out about 10 times and have seen zero bears; this is my first season hunting anything so I'm not too surprised at my fortunes so far, but does anyone have any advice? I've been heading out in the evenings and setting up over open/ broken hillsides to glass. I've been hunting...
