I use about a 3' by 7' piece of Tyvek under my Big Agnes air core pad without any problems. I would hesitate to sleep with the pad directly on the ground though.
I am looking to buy a Cabelas Alaskan I/II pack frame (the $99 model on Cabelas' website). I am in Bozeman and would prefer to buy from someone in the area in order to avoid shipping fees. I'd be interested if you have one laying around that you don't use anymore. Thanks.
Does anyone have any opinions on Duncan Gilchrist's books about Montana rams? How helpful would they be in preparing for a sheep hunt in the unlimiteds?
Thanks for all the advice guys; I think that if I'm fortunate this spring and do get a bear I'll try something like RobG's method and see how it turns out.
Have any of you ever heard of using car battery acid to "pickle" a hide? From what I've read it sounds effective, but I would be worried...
Thanks for the input guys. In case I can't find a way to sell a hide, do you guys know of any inexpensive ways to preserve it? What happens to a hide that is salted and fleshed a couple times, left to dry out, and then just tacked up in the shed?
I really enjoy spotting/ watching bears in the...
I'm already looking forward to spring bear season here in MT and was wondering what some of you guys do with bear hides that you don't want to have tanned? Will a taxidermist or tannery buy a fresh, green hide? I can't find anything on FWP commenting on the legality of this...
I've also heard wolves up New World Gulch...last time was this past October. They were in the "basins" just north and east of Mystic Lake. I think they hop back and forth between Hyalite and New World Gulch during the fall; not sure exactly where they'd be now.
Best of luck and let us know...
Thanks for all the advice so far!
I'll have to take a look at my BMA maps and see what Glasgow looks like.
I've looked at Scenic View Rd on maps and it's hard to tell what kind of condition it's in so thanks for the head's up if it gets wet. Is there another access point to the Badlands from...
I recently read "Hunting Open Country Mule Deer" by Dwight Schuh and the style of hunting that he describes has really caught my imagination. After two seasons of attempting to bow hunt elk, I've realized that I just don't enjoy calling as a hunting tactic and want to give something new a try...
I am looking to sell a lightly used pair of SCARPA Zanskar hiking boots. I bought these boots back in July at Base Camp in Billings with the intention of using them for hunting. After about 30-40 miles of really trying to make these boots work, I've realized I just don't like rigid-sole boots...
Any news from you 312-50 tag holders? I've been applying for this tag and hope to draw in a few years... would love to hear how your seasons have gone so far!
I know your pain; I didn't grow up hunting either and moved to Bozeman, MT after college. I was lucky enough to have a friend who is an accomplished hunter show me the ropes last season (my first season), but I have been trying to find my own areas this past summer and fall and not rely on his...
I was elk hunting around Mystic Lake in the Bozeman area a couple weekends ago and heard several different groups howling back and forth to each other from a couple different sides of the canyon. I was setting up my tent for the night and they were carrying on from about 8:30 till 9PM.
And just a friendly reminder to anyone else new to hunting the Bozeman area: don't shoot a mule deer buck in the Bridgers (HD 312), it's a special permit only area. I'd hate to hear of someone getting in trouble for shooting a deer they thought was legal.
Rifle season is less than a week away and I was wondering what to expect on opening morning; will most of the trailhead parking lots along the Gallatin Canyon (Indian Ridge, Lava Lake, Asbestos Creek, Storm Castle and Swan Creek especially) be completely packed? This will be my first opener...
I've had some meat care questions for a while and ismith's bull is a perfect prompt:
How do you keep meat for 24-36 hrs in the type of weather we've been having in SW MT so far this season? I'm assuming ismith deboned all the meat, bagged it, and hung it in the shade/ somewhere cooler. It's...
