At the risk of jinxing myself, I am looking for recommendations for a taxidermist in the south central part of Colorado. I drew a 4th season deer tag. I noticed a leftover 4th season elk tag in the same unit, and applied my son for it. He ended up drawing. I typically bring a burner and pot to...
I won't have my load book in front of me for a little over a week, so I don't know the exact charge. I found a good node with 162 ELD-X and 4831SC around 2880fps out of an 8 twist PacNor barrel.
I inherited a department store brand Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. I threw a 1-4x Vortex on it and carry it deer hunting occasionally. It's a really handy gun, and a cool round to boot. I'm set up to reload for it, just haven't ran out of factory ammo to make myself start working up a load.
I've always shot a 16ga. It was pretty rare for the longest time, but has gained a little popularity over the years.
As far as rifles go, I don't know many people around me still shooting a 300SAUM or 35 Remington.
I rebarreled a 700 Mountain Rifle in 280 to a 280AI a few years back. I've had the gun since 1995 and had absolutely shot the barrel out. The throat was so eroded I couldn't get anything to shoot accurately from it anymore. I went with a PacNor #2 contour (similar to the Remington Magnum...
You should definitely read up on that one. ATF opened fire on, and burned, a compound in Idaho while trying to serve a warrant. Pretty much kicked off the whole "ATF will shoot your dog" stereotype too. FBI, Federal Marshalls, pretty much all the alphabet agencies were involved. Fun times
I'm in Colorado on vacation. I spent my first 2 days scouting for my 4th season deer tag. My son got the notification this morning that he drew a 4th season elk tag in the same unit in the secondary draw. Gonna be a busy 5 days in November.
My CO deer strategy is going to shift to lower point archery tags. I've just been banking points wanting a rut hunt or an early high country rifle. I'll get my rut hunt this year, then go with archery tags in CO if I try to draw again.
The unit I drew went from an 8 point unit last year, to an 11 point unit this year. I figured with the tag allotment changes and pending season date changes there would be some creep. I didn't expect it to be that bad.
In MS the only way you can hunt 16th section (State school trust lands) is to lease the hunting rights from the state. They come up for bid on a 5 year basis. They also have leases for other recreation purposes (a section near me is leased for a mountain bike trail), agricultural purposes, and...
