If it's just about getting to hunt "something," cruise this forum a while. There are over the counter elk tags in lots of states (including Utah, by the way), easy draws for cow elk tags in lots of others, etc. You can (at least right now) hunt antelope every year in Wyoming if you go about the...
My experience has been that by week two, it calms down a ton. Look, with two points, a lot of the units you will be looking at won’t have ample road access. That’s good for you bc so many hunters just cruise the roads. I’ve gone second week two years now and while there are still plenty of road...
This is what I do and have done it about the same amount of time. If you can, build an insert in the cooler (I use PVC pipe) to keep the meat off the bottom so it doesn't sit in the melted water.
I would second the folks here who suggested getting more applications out there. At least for now, there are still OTC options for you, so if you want to hunt elk each year, you can. The point game, whether you're trying for general or limited entry, is only getting harder and more expensive.
Great write up, great persistence (year over year), and I‘m glad it worked out for you and Grant. Always hope to run into that kind of hunter/person while out there.
I suspect you’re right—tag prices going up, points getting more expensive, points devaluing each year because of creep, etc. And that has an amplifying effect on the rest of the tags, doe tags included—if more people are trying to get out there in “safe” draw units, why not tack on some “safe“...
It's good practice to keep it attached, but if you're taking the head with you (I assume you are), you don't actually have to leave the sex organs attached...
State land is fair game. Access will NOT be a problem in 31. Different rules for camping, parking, etc, on state vs blm vs whatever, but for just hunting, you're good to go. Have fun!
The day tag results come out, there’s always elation (Yay! I finally got my _ tag!), sadness (Bummer. Another year not chasing antelope.), and confusion (How the heck did a unit go from 100% draw odds to 10% draw odds???).
I won’t belabor the point Big Fin has made much more eloquently than I...
All I'll add is, make sure whatever you're wearing is waterproof. Mid-October, the weather can be all over the place. My mid-October hunt last year there was snow on the ground the first day, then it melted off. Ground was really wet. By mid day, if you didn't have waterproof boots on, you were...
I have not weighed it (don't have a scale), but my suspicion is you're close--I'm guessing total weight at around 410 (31.5" arrow at 9.07 gr, etc). What I really don't understand is, what should I be shooting for with that draw length and draw weight? 450 total?
I won't say I'll be shocked if you don't get it, but will definitely be surprised if you don't. Still, let us know. A few folks on here (myself included) usually post a little about point creep after the draw results are out. Last year was interesting. You can see the discussion of the impact on...
Guys, jumping on to this. First time bowhunting elk this fall. I'm starting to wonder if my setup is just WAY under weight for elk, or whether it's ok. Here's what I've got:
60lb draw weight Mathews Triax at 29 inch draw length.
350 grain maxima red carbon express arrows
100 grain Rage...
