Anyone have a contact at Texas Parks and Wildlife that I could reach out to re: actually getting the points data published? Texas has never published it, but it's starting to sound like they should. Especially if every category has people holding 20+ points, which I'm sure it does.
All,
So for this year, for the first time, the preference points in Texas (called "loyalty points") will be cubed for applicants. Until this year, they were just extra shots at a draw--so if you had two loyalty points, and you applied, your name would go into the hat three times for that...
This has been my view from the beginning. It's why I don't mind the point systems in some states. Accumulate a couple points in a couple places, cash them in, rinse and repeat. I want to hunt every year. I don't so much care about hunting that elusive "trophy" tag. And by the way, why on earth...
Someone on a different thread mentioned it was nice to see the State recovering the cost of the investigation, and I completely agree. The value of the animal should only be the starting point for the fine...
So I’m honestly not sure where I come out on any of this. I’m fairly new to western hunting (within the last 5 years). When I got into it, I did a lot of research across the states and decided where I would be willing to spend money to build points.
For example, states that required me to buy a...
For my money, Gorsuch beginning to look like a consistent vote for upholding treaty rights is an interesting and welcome development. His opinion really seems, though, to come from this sentiment: "In any event, the magnitude of a legal wrong is no reason to perpetuate it." That's what he...
Eh, little column A, little column B. People are getting better at using the resources out there, so I think they're spreading their applications around more (as in, making choices more and more based on draw odds). That probably has the effect of making more people apply for tags initially that...
And if you do decide to use them on yourself (I'm with twsnow18, I think you should), maybe buy your son a preference point this year. You can still guarantee a tag with one preference point. So he could still draw a unit next year (it won't be your unit) and have a shot at a buck--that's not...
Welcome to HT and good luck! I was basically in your shoes when I started planning my first antelope hunt a few years ago. Had missed the draw, but was still able to apply for a preference point. Which you should do.
I hear ya on the quick to judgment aspect. And I don't know what kind of person this guy is. All I'm saying is, well, revoking his licenses seems a pretty weak punishment to me. From the article, in addition to illegally trapping numerous bobcats, he took mule deer in at least three illegal...
You're on the right track. Find the bows that feel good in your hands that you can shoot. But...once you know that, don't overlook used bows. A lot of guys use a bow for one season, keep them in great shape, and sell them. I shoot a Mathews Triax. I could never have afforded that bow new, but I...
Congrats on your retirement. Look, the great news is, if you go for the special, there are probably only 4 units you won't draw with that many points (60, 61, 62-1, 114-1), and you might have a chance at those depending on how people allocate their points next year. But, there are probably only...
Agree with all this. One thing to pay attention to is point creep. As in, if you for sure want to do the hunt next year, a unit that took 11 points last year might not necessarily be a sure thing draw this year. Just food for thought.
Welcome to HT!
Welcome to hunt talk. I think that unit is probably ok--though probably no monsters there, and reported success rates are not what I would call high. That said, your options are limited if you have no preference points built up, and I think your draw odds for that unit are about 30% or so...
