I agree with that, seeth07--certainly everyone is entitled to do all those things. Where I disagree is the notion that non residents don't ALSO deserve to harvest animals on those lands. Could states stop them from doing it? Probably (though that would certainly bring a lawsuit, and maybe even a...
I don't know, seeth07. Those seem like blanket and demonstrably wrong statements. "Super cheap and plentiful opportunities"? Doubtful, unless you're saying opportunities to get outside and not opportunities to actually be successful in harvesting something.
I don't disagree that no one is...
For me, the article is just a good reminder that there are other perspectives to consider when we're out there hunting. Is is the best written, best tone, 100% accurate, etc, etc? Naw, of course not. But I do think I'm often guilty of not taking into account what a neighboring landowner might...
It's a conversation that's been had on this site many times, but at some point, the state/feds really need to step in and help out. For example, I'd love to see the State codify that corner crossing is not trespass. That would stop silly civil suits as well as the criminal issues (that always...
Will be interested to hear the adjacent landowner's claim for damages in the civil suit--after all, to win a civil suit, you need to show damages, even nominal ones in the case of trespass. Will they argue that, by trespassing (and let's be clear, I don't think this was trespassing), the hunters...
I tend to think you (and others) are right that tag prices could increase substantially for some animals and not really dent the demand/scare NR hunters off. Would the "market bear" a $3000 NR elk tag? Probably it would in most areas. I think a more interesting question is, would that change the...
I second this. I think it's probably right that, while you might get lucky and draw randomly from time to time, it will be a very long time (if ever) before you can reliably draw a bull tag in Wyoming again once you burn your points. I would apply for a cow tag or two and start getting used to...
How do we actually feel about the suggestion (in the story) that the mere act of shooting elk that were "trapped" on an island is not ethical? The story seems to spend more time on that portion--that it's not fair chase to kill elk that are in the middle of an island--and less on the issue of...
Zander, welcome. One thing you might look into is leasing some timber land to the east of you (Tyler, Henderson, Carthage, etc). There's a lot of timberland around there and various management companies lease it out for very low fees just to make a little income while the trees are growing. You...
Good luck, and thanks for letting us follow along. Just enjoy the hell out of it. It's probably the only time in your life you'll have this (or any) sheep tag in your pocket.
Man, way to stick with it and not blow the hunt on account of those ants. I probably would not have been able to withstand the temptation to get them off.
This!
If you're more or less happy with the bow itself, figure out what piece of gear you think will most help/improve you (better sight, better rest, better stabilizer, etc) then just take it with you to your next bow. Also, your "nice" bow might be closer than you think. I bought my first...
Wonder if they will actually pursue this felony charge--recall that he was originally charged with some felonies as well, and pleaded out to a lesser charge.
You basically just have to find someone willing to sell you one. I'm pretty sure NM publishes a list of landowners who get tags, etc. Many of the landowners use outfitters to sell their tags. But for example, even GoHunt has a page that lists tags for sale, some in NM.
That's incredible! How many bonus points did you go into the draw with? My sense is, after the changes were implemented two years ago (Texas now uses a cubed bonus point system), I will never draw.
Awesome, congrats! Thanks for mentioning the number of stalks that didn't work out--helps those new archery hunters like myself keep things in perspective.
Yes, you can buy doe tags for Area 10 starting at 8am MST the 12th, I believe. The only other options (buck or doe) are only valid on private land. But...the fact that there are leftover tags in 10 should tell you something about how likely it is you'll get an antelope on public land in 10.
