Hard packed snow here in town. I haven't been to the farm to see how bad the rural areas are. Winds picking up today and lots of drifting. Snow's still falling. I think my January goose hunting plans blew away with this storm too.
A foot of snow on the ground here in southern Iowa and another 6-12" on the way. Highs Sunday and Monday are supposed to be -5ish.
Figures, perfect deer hunting weather a week after everything ends.
More bears fell that week. One first time hunter got his bear. There was another guy out for his first bear as well. On the last day we treed one and I fought my way through the laurel to the tree. There were three of us at the tree and I loaded up my 7mm-08 pistol for the shot. I found an...
It's the winter solstice, four days until Christmas. My fingers are cracked and calloused, my eyes are fried and I'm running on caffeine and hate. This is the life of a bench jeweler in December and I need a break. So, here's the story of my West Virginia bear hunt.
It all started at a...
Wish I would have seen this sooner. I hunt WV with hounds from time to time. A big issue in the state is baiting. I don't know who decided that baiting for deer was OK but baiting for bear wasn't. I guess maybe deer hunters should put up a sign or something warning the bears off of their...
You just hit the nail on the head.
You kill one and another moves in. When you remove one from its territory that territory is now up for grabs and another will move in. Maybe the next one (a pair really) won't be as bold. Maybe it will be worse.
One of the best years I had coyote hunting I...
I would say not to worry about it. When I lived on the farm I had them at the edge of the yard all the time. Even had one that hated to take a dump in the deep snow. Every morning as I would go to work I'd check my rearview mirror to find him sneaking down the trail to crap in my machine...
They don't use hunting knives either. Stiffer blades with a broader edge sharpen better with a stone and strop than a steel or ceramic rod. Thin, flexible boning knives with a small edge bevel will polish right off on a steel.
The real problem is most people haven't been taught how to use a...
I've had seasons like that. Don't worry, even if you end up skunked this year it'll just make success taste all the sweeter next year when you bag one.
Run a patch with nitro-solvent (not copper remover) followed by a dry patch (or a brush then dry patch) through the barrel. Next run an oiled patch through. light oil on all metal then put it away. A bore guide might be a good idea to keep solvent out of the action.
This was the routine we...
Yeah, they'll probably add a couple more in the next few weeks. During gun season it turns from:
Idiots
Out
Wandering
Around
to:
Idiots Out Driving Deer and Blasting Away at Anything They Can.
Plenty of drillings out there. Just beware that most are European in origin and are 16ga side by sides over an often obscure or uncommon Euro caliber. The problem with such affairs is the sights. They are fine for birds with just a rail or bead but that isn't great for big game. Put on leaf...
A lesson for you younger guys:
Time isn't constant. A year isn't 365 days, a day isn't 24 hours and an hour isn't 60 minutes. Time moves faster and faster the older you get. You may think you have 30 or 40 or 50 years of hunting and good times ahead...it'll be gone before you know it.
It's been many years since I've killed a deer with my bow. Come to think of it I haven't killed any big game animal in...five years? Hunting hasn't been great for me lately as work and life have gotten in the way and what little time I did spend hunting was dedicated to making sure my kids and...
