    Canadian Lake Packing list

Hey Guys, our group just finalized details and we will be bear hunting in N Ontario the 1st week of June 2023. It is a remote boat in lodge, with fishing during the mornings before going to the stand in the evenings. The lake has pike, walleye, whitefish, and smallmouth bass in it. We are...

Ground shrinkage, deer and elk version

No photos, this is an old story from when I was a kid. My uncles best friend shot a really nice 10pt whitetail on a primitive weapons hunt on one of the local WMAs. Each deer had to be checked in, and with 1200 hunters on the WMA, the warden station was always full of people just watching deer...

Sow bears and boo boos - let's see them.

My brother shot this little guy 15 years ago on a trip. Every time he starts to talk any smack, I just whoa my bird dog next to it for comparison.

    Chamber Empty or Loaded

Usually have a round in the chamber once I am in the field. All my rifles are mausers with 3 position safeties that hold the cocking piece and firing pin in place. Anywhere near vehicles, people, or climbing into a stand, I remove the round from the chamber

    Recent project

Been working on this rifle for a little while. Picked up a CZ550 American 30-06 in a fairly rough stock. Metal was in good shape and bore was mint. Just looked like someone had beat the finish off the stock in a tree stand. Ran across an unused MPI fiberglass/kevlar stock for a CZ. Had to finish...

Bullet selection for close range black bear

I'm worried about them not expanding properly on a black bear. To my understanding on the 9.3s the partition was moved forward to improve performance on large game like cape buffalo. I'm sure they were designed to be used in the faster 9.3x62 and 9.3x64. The minimum recommended velocity is 1800...

    Alaska cabin?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cabin in Alaska. We are looking at taking a family trip summer 2023. 6-8 adults and 4 kids. Would love a place that is turn key with boat and all equipment needed for stream and ocean fishing. Sight seeing and close to activities that would keep kids...

Bullet selection for close range black bear

Got a bear hunt booked in N Ontario for spring of 2023. Booked a small outfitter that only hunts 1 week in spring and fall. They average 225lb boars but take a 350-400lb bear each week. So theres a decent chance at getting a shot at a big bear. Avg boreal thick cover, where shots will be close...

    Taste testing wild pig meat

Taste test the loins. That will tell you. The boars we have killed either have a musky smell from several feet away or not. All the 1s that didn't stink were fine. Just finished making 170 lbs if chorizo, hot Italian, andouille and breakfast sausage out of some from a trip to Texas.

Moving FROM Montana...to Montgomery, AL. Local advice?

I'm in North Alabama, about 2 hours from Montgomery. You hit the nail on the head regarding leases. Annual club memberships run the spectrum on costs, depending on size, members, amenities. The blackbelt around the Montgomery area is some of the best deer hunting in the state. We have a very...

Has Anyone Here Been to The Annual Buffalo Roundup in SD?

Get there early and the crowds thin out quickly afterwards. We didn't have a problem moving between the 2 sites after the roundup. The festival was by the main lodge at the park.

Has Anyone Here Been to The Annual Buffalo Roundup in SD?

We went 3-4 years ago. It was a good time. Wife and I enjoyed the roundup and the arts/craft festival after. A guy had some brown bear skulls and a dall sheep skull for sale.

Military Grade Ammo in a Modern Rifle

It is generally safe to shoot in a modern rifle. Military cases are thicker, reducing case capacity. They are not usually loaded as hot as a commercial round, because they were designed for use in 03s and garands. Depending on age, the primers may be corrosive. Clean well after range time. The...

The Gun Cabinet of Regrets,,,Wish I didn't sell it, or Wish I bought it.

15 years ago, I was wandering through the gunshow in Birmingham and bumped into a guy with a martini henry sporter similar to this photo. It was a "newer" build that he said was a 45/70. He wanted $400 for it. I didn't know enough about them to properly inspect the rifle, so I turned it down. By...
