Joined BHA - Backcountry Hunters & Anglers

Probably getting a Platinum Lifetime Membership here soon, and trying to decide which goody package I want. I don't really need a 12-man tipi, so does anybody know if you can get a smaller tipi package of equal or lesser value if you get the Platinum Membership?

American Prairie Reserve - Making it easier to get a bison tag

Right now, yeah, it's a livestock shoot. But it's a step in the process toward turning them back into wildlife.

    How do they taste?

American Prairie Reserve - Making it easier to get a bison tag

I don't think it's pre-picked animals, just has to be a <2 year old bison from what I can tell. Anybody heard on winners of the local drawing?

    Squirrels! It's Whats for Supper

Greenhorn, I'm glad you're too closed-minded to eat squirrels. There aren't that many in Montana, and it leaves more for me.

    Another Cool Find

I don't think it flipped him all the way over. All it had to do was catch his rack and drive his tines into the ground (which they clearly were). Then between being pinned into the ground below and having the weight of the tree above, plus being in an awkward position, he's stuck (if it didn't...

    Another Cool Find

The thing I really wish I knew the answer to is whether the tree killed him instantly, or just pinned him there to die a very unpleasant death. From the way he's pinned, what I can piece together is that he was standing there, walking away from the camera in the second picture, heard a sound...

    legal moose help

You know what I highly recommend? Reading the regulations for the area you are hunting, rather than relying on a buddy or random strangers on the internet. "Some guys on Hunt Talk told me..." won't fly with a warden. There are different regulations for residents and non-residents. They're pretty...

    Another Cool Find

It looks like those G4s and G5s were jammed into the ground. I'm confident he was killed by a falling tree.

    Interesting Find

My moose had a previous skull injury that had rehealed. I'm guessing he got roughed up pretty good at some point by another bull, given the shape of the injury.

Sausage Making - Grind twice or just one time?

Depends on the type of sausage and the texture I want. If I want a coarser, more rustic sausage, usually just once. If I want a smoother mouthfeel, or if I'm making an emulsified sausage, then twice.

House bill moving forward to allow bikes in Wilderness

If you're going to oppose bikes, you'd better oppose horses. For me, it's either both or neither.

    Let's see your moose mounts

Moose is the perfect skull for a euro mount, IMO. Everything (antlers and skull) lies in the same plane, so the whole mount can sit flush against the wall. It's a very classy look.

Who All is Retired and How Do You Do It?

I'm 34. I put away 31% of my income every month (plus 5% from company match). I'm on pace to be able to choose when/where I want to work by age 48-50.

    Knife Sharpener

I guess I should have specified. I'm looking for something that will work for both my hunting knives AND my kitchen knives. Havalons are great though.

    Knife Sharpener

I'm thinking about a new knife sharpener. I currently hand sharpen my knives (Lansky), but sharpening is such a time-consuming process I'm hoping there's a sharpener out there that will produce as good of results with far less effort - that way I'll sharpen my knives as often as I should. What...

    3 For 1?

Unless you have pronghorn at the top of your list, I'd say start with elk & deer, and if you tag out early, have a contingency to go find some pronghorn.

Nothing too special, but I was happy:

How small a buck would you shoulder mount?

I'm partial to euros, regardless of the size.
