    Sniffing Distance

I watched a bull and 3 cows wind a guy and his girlfriend from what had to be 450 yards directly upwind on opening morning of rifle. They didn’t just feed off they busted out at a full “I smelled you” gallop.

NV Silver State Desert Sheep Hunt

Exciting! But all I can think about is how much it must cost to keep a guide (or two) in the field since July?!?! Hope you get a tank!!

    Christensen Arms, what's the verdict?

Ridgeline FFT 300 PRC the most expensive gun I have ever owned. Doesn’t shoot near as well as my Browning X-Bolt Hells Canyon Speed in 6.5 PRC which was about half the price. This will likely be my last Christensen.

    Struggling in Idaho…

Well that’s a wrap for my time in Idaho. What started out as a frustrating hunt really ended up teaching me a lot. I wish I could say I learned more about where to go and where not to go on a mountain from looking at onX but I haven’t. A place that looks wide open could be a thicket that you...

    Struggling in Idaho…

Wish I had a better story. Nothing showed. Lost my way somehow on the way out and ended up in willow hell. Soaked to the bone. Wife (nurse) says mild hypothermia hands, lips blue but that’s how it goes. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? I don’t know about that. I suck at navigating in...

    Struggling in Idaho…

I never have, I guess I’m always thinking I’ll trade a comfortable nights rest for a hike in. I do need to consider that option though especially in a situation like this.

    Struggling in Idaho…

Got out after work today to a ridge I have been glassing from and at last light a herd of elk came out across the canyon. I headed that way and as close as I could get was 900 yards. There was a nice 5 pt bull in the group but just couldn’t get closer before it got dark. Going back tomorrow to...

    First Western Mule Deer Hunt

I kind of think if black bears as big raccoons. I don’t carry raccoon spray but don’t want to corner one either :) Edit: all that said the most important thing is you feeling comfortable. I hunt solo a lot and struggle with it, especially in grizzly country. So if spray makes you feel better...

    First Western Mule Deer Hunt

On the inreach/zoleo mentioned above I agree having something that works anywhere is important. If you have a newer iPhone update it and you will be able to send iMessages via satellite. If you do this take a small battery to charge phone.

    First Western Mule Deer Hunt

Great advice on a tripod or something (I use a small monopod with great success) to stabilize your binos. Also, I’d maybe buy a stumble on bear tag since you will be up high glassing a lot. Most of all enjoy yourself and enjoy the country. Take time to enjoy the sunrise and look at it as a...

    Struggling in Idaho…

Looked over a ton of country today. No elk turned up. Did hear a firing squad just after first light over the ridge in the next unit. 11 shots in less than a minute…I don’t know what happened but guessed cow tags all filled from one herd? Have to work tomorrow will be out glassing tomorrow evening.

    Struggling in Idaho…

Got to my pin on top of a ridge just after daylight. The climb up was nothing short of torture. I can handle steep but the last .3 mile was straight up fighting a wall of willows. There were times I was legit wondering if there was a way through. Spent the morning glassing from multiple places...
