Letter writing 101 - tips for writing an effective letter

Excellent stuff, Messrs. Lamb and Long, We have had several threads recently that I believe justify being made into a sticky. This is one.

Federal Government right to own land

As various groups have found over the years, if you repeat a lie often enough and loudly enough, it starts to sound like the truth to a lot of people. Especially if someone stands to make money off it.

the NRA is ticking me off

I have had the NRA and the Republican National Committee send certified letters asking for money. I had to go to the post office to sign for junk mail. As my dad used to say, I was fit to be tied. In both cases I called them and the letters and phone calls stopped.

    Any spare prayers appreciated

I wish there was soething I could say that would make things better, but all I can do is pray for him and his family and friends.

Why the NRA needs to stay neutral on land-use issues

I have been a life member of the NRA since about 1978. Some years back I went through an issue of American Hunter and counted the number of pages of ads for ATVs and for guns. There were more ATV ads than gun ads. Follow the money. Selling off federal land is going to have a lot bigger...

Transfer of Public Lands Act and Study

KMWJR - IMO you are doing great. Getting an elected official to call you is better than I have ever done. I get either a form letter or nothing. The main thing is that they know you are against sale of public lands. They know dollars, and they know votes.

    Wyoming bison hunt

Thanks for taking us along, Randy. Fresh Tracks and OYOA show the reality of the on your own hunter. Often it includes taking an animal, but if you have to kill something, don't go elk (or bison, I guess) hunting. That is why we watch.

    Moose - Lets see em!

I have wasted my life. Excellent pictures. Like any good trophy, I am sure those pictures call back a ton of memories.

Rookie question of the year: Camping

The picture shows the extent of my outfit - small trailer, SUV, and a Cabelas Alaknak tent with a wood stove when it is cold enough to need it. I camp by the side of the "road". Other posts have done a good job of the details. Good luck.

YouTube - Season 1, On Your Own Adventures coming soon

Far out! (now I am really dating myself). I have been enjoying the podcasts, the videos and of course the shows. I hope the DVDs will still be available.

    New Star Wars

The original was a compilation of every cliche in the movies - I LOVED IT. Some things are timeless. Sounds like the new one is along the same lines. Once the crowds die down a bit we will see it.

    Do I really need chains?

What do you do about the fronts? I drive a 4runner and have been thinking about spacers to get clearance.

Best scope for under $200 ??

The problems I have had with scopes have been with the elevation / windage adjustments rather than the optics (maybe because of my old eyes). In my experience, Redfields seem to hold up well. Redfield is Leupold's value brand, and as far as I know is made by Leupold or to their specs. IMO you...

How much is an elk hunt worth to you ?

My guess is that cow tags may be available - put in for a cow tag in the 2nd draw while you are building points. That way you can hunt elk most years, and know the area before you burn your points.

How much is an elk hunt worth to you ?

I started out doing DIY deer hunts on a national wildlife refuge in New Jersey. My first elk hunts were all outfitted - what I really wanted was to do a horseback hunt in a wilderness area. I had a good time but did not see many elk, let alone kill one. I read an article years ago by Jim...

    tent stove

Last year, after 9 years with a 9 foot Alaknak, I upgraded to the 12 foot size. I had been using a sheet metal stove that I got with the first tent, and a few years back switched to a cylinder stove. The sheet metal stove was very leaky - so much air came in at the seams that it was impossible...
