Had both shoulders done, rotator cuff and torn bicep tendon in left, just tear repair in right. Have had a new right knee and hip, probably 3 surgeries on left knee. Just recounting that so when I say the shoulder surgeries were the most painful and slow recoveries of ALL the ortho procedures I...
Lived in Lyme CT and contracted it twice, fortunately before the docs knew what it was they put me on antibiotics the first time and by the second time it had a name. I was in the first trial of the old vaccine which worked by killing the virus while in the tick before it was transferred...
I have shot 6-7 elk cows with a 270 and Barnes, Nosler, and Federal Fusion bullets and never took a second shot, the range was 200-400 yards and I usually had a nice clean broadside shot. If he takes a clean shot out to 500 yards he should be fine. I am betting 1,000's of elk have been shot with...
Go 10 ply, on one hunt in Montana we had a rented GMC Blazer and my truck woke up to find 3 flat tires on the Blazer after a day of driving on ranch roads. The truck had no issues with 10 ply on the same roads. The old line that the difference between a rental car and a 4 wheel drive is that a...
It is, the Kiwi's thought I was daft to insist on bow hunting after we found him and missed several easy rifle opportunities, with all the junk hanging on him he is a pretty cool euro mount.
I have collected points for 20 years partially the result of hunting NM,UT,AZ when I drew tags (over 20 years drew 7 non-res tags). I mainly hunted archery OTC in Colorado, and getting B tags for cows on my ranch in Durango. When we had a serious herd in the valley and dealing with lots of...
Spent the last 2 days cruising CO 76 scouting with my young friend in his Polaris Razor that is one way to get a good feel of terrain and where we might stage our horses if we decide to use them. We found several moose so I know where I will ever go if I draw a tag, some very "moosy" spots...
I have an early rifle tag for first week in October and will be scouting 7/23-4 and in august as well. very rugged area you need to be in good HIGH ALTITUDE conditioning if you are on foot. I live here at 7,000 and i am working on conditioning, I am 75 by the way and burned 20 points for the tag.
I am always attracted to wildcats and off beat stuff, bought some terrific rifles at auctions that others turned their noses up at. My favorites are a 350 Griffin & Howe (375 H&H necked down) that came in a 30 Remington express and a Turkish walnut stock, dies and some original Fred Barnes hand...
Well I am 75 and am heading into CO 76 for early rifle elk which is pretty rugged and I have lots of metal body parts, don't rule out anything if you stay in shape, I use a prospective hunt as motivation to work out. Not to say you should not hunt as much as you can!
I have taken them with almost everything from a 338 WM, 338/06, 300 WM, 7mm STW, 30-06, and a few with 6.5 '06 and very stout bullets. They are way tougher than elk and are right up there with the tougher african species like eland. the meat is excellent, very lean and rich. They can't survive...
Burn area is coming back nicely, still tough for archery as it is pretty open we are doing better drought wise now, but still pretty dry. The season is super dependent on weather and this year the elk were not talking much until we were late in the season. I can't remember if 74 is OTC for archery.
Me three, on the beers, can we add a few shots of a good rye whisky to the mix, I have a bottle of Pappy's to crack. I think the issue is simple the largest producer of gas and oil, US, just defaulted on energy security and decided fossil fuels are evil so we need to cut off funding for drilling...
I have brass and dies if you want them, sold mine a few years ago and wound up with a 6mm Remington so no need. can even part with some bullets if you need some, the 80 grain hornady's are very effective on coyotes.
I have used N160 in 270, 7 mag and 308 Norma mag and found a few excellent loads, the 308 liked a max load with both 165 and 180 bullets. I preferred the H4831sc in the 270 and 7 mag, just metered way better than regular H4831. The V160 meters very accurately.
You will likely be very unhappy with the 70 gr 556 bullet in a 1:9 twist, for the Sierra 69 gr they recommend 1:7 twist, that long bullet just will not stabilize for consistent accuracy.
Be glad to make suggestions. it is VERY weather dependent so we need to stay in touch close to the season. The drought is having a big impact on game movement, not the least is concern about fires this summer.
