I have shot the 6.5x55 for many years and is my go to gun in the Uk. I shoot 140gr and the ballistics out to 300yds are the same as a 165gr 30 cal. I does have the edge though as it behaves better in the wind. It's flight deflection is more predictable than a 30cal which at times flies like a...
Hi all, thanks for all your comments. Went and looked at Z3, Z5 &Z6. Z6 was nice but had quite poor eye relief when I looked through it, Z5 was the heaviest but very nice. To me the Z3 was the clearest and had the best eye relief. The one I looked through had a BXR reticle which negates the need...
I was planning to put the 8x56 on for now and see how I get on with the British deer. Supposed I am worried that a big target close up may be an issue rather than those far away. I have no experience of hunting Elk so am grateful for any advice thank you.
Just an update and a thanks to all who commented. Really taken by the leupold fire dot VX-6 but cannot find anyone here in the UK who stocks them. So looked at Z3 and read there were potential issues with accuracy on larger calibres due to recoil and as it is to go on a 30-06 without a moderator...
Hi am looking way forward but planning an Elk hunt in Montana in 2018, with help from you guys have decided on bringing the 30-06 so am now looking at lightweight scopes. I have an old 8x56 Zeiss which I could bring but wondered whether a variable mag scope might be better. Three scopes have...
Thanks I think this is where I'm going after all that has been said. Father Christmas just bought me an 8" steel gong so planning some 300-400yd practice sessions!
Happy new year to you all.

All of this is really helpful. Think it has given me the resolve to bring the 06 and spend the next 20 months learning to shoot it well. Another clincher apart from the ammo is the fact that I cannot bring a moderator to shoot in Montana. My Swede only has a 20" barrel so to get the performance...
Makes sense. I have shot the 30-06 with target bullets out to 600yds but found after 400yds judging the windage challenging. All be it this was in top if a moor which is not short of a breeze or two and it was gusting. I found that the judgement of the gust much more critical with the 06 than...
Cheers guys. Sone great points, hadn't thought about ammo availability in US which may be a clincher. Looks like the 06 gets the vote which I'm cool with. I have light rifles in both and time to practice with the 30-06 at range so get use to its behaviour particularly in wind. This is where in...
Hi I need some advice. I am Planning a trip in 2018 to montana with Richard (Devon Deer) and am thinking about which rifle to bring. I have a 30-06 which is loaded with 180gr NP or a 6.5x55 with 140gr Sierra GK (but thinking of changing those to NP).
I shoot the 6.5 more and am very comfortable...
Boy that takes me back to when I was a school kid on a trip in Wales. "Setting the map" we called it. A skill once learnt never forgotten and has got me out of some tricky places in Scotland. Good to see that GPS has not overtaken the good old tried and tested ways of map and compass.
Looks an idea. Do you just take the lumbar pack when you hunt and if you get lucky hang the meat then go back to camp for the pack to Extract the meat?
This is from the range yesterday. Working up a load for my 30-06 using 180gr nosler bullets. The load was 56gr IMR4350, and the seating depth the same. Both were aimed at the red circle and the grid is .5" squares. The two on the right are accubond a and on the left partitions. I stopped after...
