If you need to go heavier than 243 think 6.5x55, light on recoil and strong in down range effect. 140gr travelling at 2700fps has the knock down power of a 165gr 308 at 300yds. This is a really underrated calibre
Hi Guys, this sounds grim for me. Was planning a trip from the UK next year with Richard (Devon Deer) and two other guys, to hunt in Montana. This sounds like it has got a whole lot less easy as from what you are saying there is only a 60% chance of success and this means the the chance of all...
Hi
Had a leupold and was very happy with it. Left it on a Scottish hill so needed to find one quickly so bought a Sig. boy wish I had bought a Sig first. Much clearer display and I will but another anytime.
Hitting a target at over a mile takes skill. Shooting at living animals over that distance is unacceptable. The time of flight of that bullet is a relatively long time and the animal can move a long way. This will as others have said lead to wounding more often than not as the energy drop will...
Seen this with 243. They can be a bit frangable. Possibly just hit a rib on the way in and deflected. It did its job and the deer died quickly. Well done
I have three set ups, two with 56mm objective and one with 42mm. To be honest I don't notice the difference I just shoot them. I prefer to shoot the one with the 42mm on but I think that is more down to the rifle than head position on the scope.
I think you may be over complicating things, I...
As others have said you do t need a 50mm objective. Going smaller will reduce weight and cost. 42-44mm is a good compromise and a 6x mag will fit nicely if you are only out to 200yds. A 3-9x will cover all but above 6x the light gathering has little effect in a 42mm lens. Leupold and Vortex do...
In the UK we would suggest the 6.6x55 (6.5 Swedish) really under rated calibre which will take Elk. The 140gr in a 6.5 is as effective as the 165gr 30cal out to 300yards. If you want to be different go Swedish.
Thanks muskeez. It was that thread that got me wondering about the thermarest cot as I too am a side sleeper and always struggle camping on foam only. If it will be good enough by itself I may invest in one and take the hit on the extra weight.
Hi
Planning a backpacking hunt in Montana in the fall (end of October) 2018. What am I best taking for sleeping on? Is a cot a good idea? Is a foam/air pad enough? Would I be better if with both?
Thanks for your help.

Lots of people reporting similar problems in the UK. I stopped using a 17HMR and moved to a 204ruger. Can load for about same price as factory 17 rounds and I know it will go bang!
Just worked up good load with 58.5 gr RL17 and 165gr Gamekings,PPU brass and CCI primers, COAL 3.300 not sure of speed but will post when get them over a chrono. They single hole at 100yds
