You can get Nosler 160 Ballistic Tips very reasonable over on Gunbroker pard. They are the Hunting type and have a heavier jacket/solid base. Years ago, I almost pulled what's left og my hair out with those VLDs! It was in a .280, and I gave up on them. I "hear" those Classics are good hunting...
The "only" time I ever insisted on the same Lot# was if I found an accurate factory load for the rifle I had. I would then buy as many boxes as I could, which way back then, might be 2, hopefully 5. Never worried about it for anything else. However, LR Hunters/shooters benefit by watching every...
Seems like I read somewhere that if you heat it until its red its too hot, so brass becomes too soft? I know there is a "paint" for the neck/shoulder or something that will turn a different color at the "right temp"?. Ever use that? Midway lists a cartridge specific case holder you put in a...
I thought that was a good way to anneal? I suppose not. I have never seriously done it anyhow, but the "annealing Machines", etc are pretty expensive. My othe rSmith friend is planning on buying a set-up, think I'll let anneal all my fired brass for me, ha. I was just passing on to Perma that...
That looks wonderful! Stop and consider that very few can hold right/shoot well any magnum off the bench! That's alot of blast, boot n beller going on each time that trigger is pulled. You are doing Jim Dandy my friend!
Could it be that you have your die screwed so far down that you are putting a "crimp" on the case's mouth? I run a trimmed MT case to the top of the ram stroke. I screw my FL die down until it "touched" the crimp shoulder. I then just unscrew it a half turn. That allows them to grow to trim...
If you had chamfered the inside case mouth ( a one time deal way back) that should not be happening. Barnes are like match bullets, if any bullet is going to shoot, they have about at 95% of shooting well. Sometimes your "group" is as tight as its going to get until you seat your bullet further...
Great! Then its simple. Seat out your bullets ten thousandths and shoot the best group over. You want to see your group come together then start opening up again, more or less. You pick the tightest group with that bullet seating depth. If won't hurt to anneal your brass though!
If IIRC you are having to load magazine length? so you can't seat them out any further. So change to a different primer, powder charge and try below:
Get a small candle. Dampen a towel and put aside. Hold the case midway with your thumb/forefinger (natch) rotate the neck and shoulder area in...
I went to Imperial Sizing Wax years ago. You just smear a little on each case, size, wipe off with a rag. On the RCBS dies, the Expander buttons need more taper on top so you don't stretch your case on the downstroke. Good dies, no doubt, just need a little tweaking. :)
I love those Redding Dies too! One thing is for sure, all your puttering around, you are learning something new each time, i.e. what works, what's necessary, whats beneficial to your specific rifle, and "to you", your mental health. Truth be told, I would hate to be stuck with shooting factory...
I don't use a bullet comparator unless I have a really accurate rifle and am seating the bullets closer than 20 thou. Normally, I end up seating all Barnes from 50 to 100 thou or other rifles I have to load to magazine length regardless of throat position. I have always had hunting rifles too...
We only "officially" have Black bear ( some claim Grizz sightings) and not an issue really. I might carry a very accurate 22 Mag or 38 spec 4" for small game opportunity/coyotes or Meth heads when I don't have a rifle. Myself, I would not hunt in Grizzly country w/o a Guide/Outfitter anyhow, so...
Unless I have alot of dirty brass, I do not use my walnut vibrator, I just use Fine steel wool to clean the neck/shoulder area. A good VLD inside neck deburrer is inexpensive and will save you from shaving your bullets when seating. I just use the old "Cricket" style for outside deburring. I too...
Good choice sir! I'm not a LRH but appreciate a stout, flat shooting rifle for elk! I have the Mark V ULWT in 338/06 Ackley Improved, a Kimber 8400 Classic in 300 WSM and a rebarreled Mod 70 fwt with Shilen 25" barrel in 7x57. On the lighter end for elk, but it will work just fine under my 400yd...
I use a LEE Factory Crimp die that is adjustable from a Fairy's breath to a Gorilla Grip! It gives the monos a good "bullet pull" on ignition and, if a compressed load, keeps the powder from pushing them forward in the case. I like it.
The summer of 1988, when I was between semesters at Bible College, we lived in an apartment. I mounted my Rockchucker press on the end of short pc of 1x6 pine. I C-clamped it to the kitchen table to reload. Just had to take my time and not touch the table when using the Balance Beam scales ( I...
When I see a "horizontal" group like that, I check out first, the parallax, could be your innards in your scope went wonky, or not up to the recoil of a 300 wby OR, its shifting in the mounts during recoil. Since I use Lock-Tite or nail polish on my screws, I don't worry about my bases, I do...
There was a period in the early offerings of the Mod 77 when Ruger did not make its own barrels. They outsourced them, I "think" Douglas was one? But there was also a batch that cost them, what I read long ago, about $17 a pop. Ha As I understand it too, when Ruger started making their own...
