    Forgotten Calibers

I've been loading the venerable 6.5 cartridges including the Swede, M-S, and 6.5-06 for many years. All of the new craze with the 6.5 is marketing related more than performance based. The 6.5X54, 6.5X55, 6.5X57, and the 6.5-06 are capable of taking any game in North America and most anywhere...

    Best paper map to order??

Arizona prints unit specific maps drawn by AZ Game and Fish for most units in Arizona. I don't know if they have one for Unit 1 or not. I know the ones we've used for Units 7, 8, 9 and 10 are awesome. Check with AZGFD and see if they have one for Unit 1. You might also try Wide World of...

What is the 1 rifle you regretted buying or wished you never had bought?

Browning A Bolt Stainless. The only rifle I've ever owned that I could not find a load to shoot under 1/2 MOA.

    High End Stocks

Here all these years I thought the big advantage to composite stocks was the fact that they were mostly unaffected by moisture and temperature and were considerably lighter.. I didn't realize the size of one's man parts was involved to any great extent.

    Rifle Accuracy Question

Question: How well do you shoot with other firearms?

    Gonna rebarrel, but to what?

Considering the action/magazine length, any of the Creedmore or WSM/short mag calibers would be a waste. Not long enough for the long rounds like the STW. Consider the 7mm WBY.

    Forgotten Calibers

One thing that has not changed over the years, is hunters/shooters all have favorites that are better (in their opinion) than the favorites of other hunters/shooters. I guess that's what keeps us all looking at new stuff. Let me just say while you are all correct, you would be more correct if...

What has changed in the last 80 years

What's changed? My first hunt was a park in camp and hike out a couple of miles and sit and watch the bear, elk, and various critters wander around the bush. Now it's drive and park, hike a ways and sit and watch the other vehicles driving and looking or parking and hiking and looking back at...

    Arizona draw results?

Dschmitt88, Didn't anyone tell you the elk migrate out of 6B before the late hunt starts? They all move west into ares with lower pastures to get out of the deep snow up there... LOL Just kidding. Good luck..

    Weird elk question

“Cactus Bucks” What are characteristics of “cactus bucks” Cactus bucks are male deer with antlers with abnormal growth patterns that retain the velvet due to alterations in testosterone level usually as a result of testicular trauma ,undescended testicles or from the effects of disease affecting...

    Arizona Lifetime License

Blackcats, you are correct in everything you've said. I paid a $35 fee for the hard plastic license, that is optional, vs. the standard paper tag that you get for free. "A person qualifies for a Pioneer License if they are 70 years of age or older and have been a resident of Arizona for 25...

    Arizon Elk Draw Mechanics.....

At last inquiry, if two applications are submitted with the same hunter information for the same species, both applications and all applicants are disqualified for that species application for that year. This was the case when I taught hunter education in Arizona. If that has changed, I am...

    Anterless Elk -AZ

First thing I would do is sign up for the Arizona Hunter Ed course and get that under your belt. That gives you one preference point automatically. I don't know what part of the valley you are in, but 17 is an "iffy" call for elk in any case. I would look to one of the three lower rim units...

    Arizona Lifetime License

Or.... wait until you get old like me and you get one automatically.. LOL.. After age 70, you can buy a Pioneer license the is good for the rest of your life and only costs $35.00. Good for hunting and fishing.

    Weird elk question

In Mule deer, they call them Cactus Bucks and they have some spectacular antlers that may never shed velvet. This occurs when some injury causes the scrotum to be lost. I've been told that does will sometimes bite the scrotum off of the younger of two twins if they are both male. I cannot...

    Arizona Elk Hunt 1st Time

I'ts all pretty well been said. Arizona has large elk in every unit with a regular draw. The state record, until recently, came from Unit 8 near Sycamore Canyon. The largest Elk I've seen in the state was in Unit 10. I've seen B&C bulls in 9, 1, 27, and 3C and huge bulls when hunting cow on...

    Arizona draw results?

You said it best.. "699 friends".. get away from the crowd. Check the area west of Mormon Lake around Sheep Springs and Buck Mountain. If that is packed with folk ( highly likely), move south and west until they thin out. Lots of sitting and watching the south facing and west facing slopes in...
