I searched and couldn't find this, so it may be an odd question. I'll be driving from Texas to hunt elk in NM this October. The plan is to load my ice chests up with dry ice and leave them at the trail head locked in the outfitters horse trailers. But something that I'm having a hard time... -
357 Magnum loads for hunting
I'm a dedicated handgun hunter. The 158 JSP is a fine choice in .357. My personal opinion is to load it as hot and safe as you can and limit yourself to deer size animals out to about 75 yards max. Good luck with it!- Big Bore

If you had to choose just one caliber???
.45 caliber - .460 SW is the cartridge for me. -
What's your elk rifle and cartridge?
Magnum Research BFR handgun in .460 S&W with 7.5" barrel. Bullet is a hand-loaded Swift Aframe 300 grain, pushed by a max load of H110. About 2000 fps at the muzzle, producing something like 2600 foot-pounds of energy. -

I'm in good shape for Texas and tenacious as hell. Getting drawn first rifle in the Gila as a non-resident is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm ready to hunt my rear off (literally). -

Next month will be 24 years for us. My wife has hobbies and stuff needs, but mine are clearly more expensive. We drew 1st rifle for 16B/22 and from everything I've read, it sounds like having horses is a big advantage. We don't. Having never hunted the Gila, I'm wondering if a certain region(s) of 16B/22 would be a bit more foot-only friendly? I'm planning to make at least one scouting trip this... -
