Future of elk hunting in the west on public land

Elk numbers are down some places; they are through the roof in others. I think elk hunting can be pretty darn awesome right now if you track the trends, get a tag, and be mobile.

I have both and like both, but the VX5HD is worth the extra money on a nice rifle.

Best Handgun Holster For Bear Country

I picked up a Kimber 1911 Camp Guard in 10mm and could use some recommendations for a holster. I carry bear spray, but there are times when I also want a handgun, such as when I'm packing elk quarters or if I'm looking to shoot a black bear with my bow. I'll generally carry it when wearing a...

Muzzleloader or shotgun slug for moose

Muzzleloaders are fun and they pack a punch. Just give yourself enough time to work up a load. It takes a while to dial one in. Shoot me a note if you go this route and I'll be happy to share what I've learned while working to dial a CVA Accura.

Fire Forming brass - 280 Rem to 280 AI

I know a guy who uses nickle plated brass in his 280AI. He's using an 09 Mauser action and I'm sure he formed his brass. Seemed to work fine. If a competent gunsmith converts your gun to AI, they will likely turn the barrel in to shorten the headspace so that the shoulder junction of the case...

    .280AI bullets question.

I get 3125 out the muzzle with a 139 grain GMX in my 280AI. I suggest taking a look at that bullet.

Barrel cleaning and shooting out barrels...thoughts.

I find my accuracy goes up with a dirty barrel. I clean my go to hunting rifle really well once annually at the end of every hunting season.

    280AI Kimber or Savage

And the Kimber is a really well thought out gun, with controlled feed, wing safety, etc. I sure like it now that I have it dialed in.

    280AI Kimber or Savage

I have a Kimber Mountain Ascent in 280AI. It doesn't like the available factory ammo, but I found a handload it'll shoot .7 MOA. Hornady GMX at 3125 out the muzzle.

    opening more refuges to hunting.....

Thanks, Buzz. I enjoyed the three week season too. I just don't like the idea of a federal agency setting hunting seasons.

    opening more refuges to hunting.....

Buzz, I don't disagree that the Montana mule deer season might run a little long, but is it the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's responsibility to set season dates for buck mule deer or Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks? I think most of us would agree it is the latter.
