The annual antelope trip to eastern Montana was great as always! This year was a little more special because Braden and Dustin got to bring Tate with us. Tate’s dad Zach had planned on joining us on this trip but he drew a very coveted Montana moose permit which we all agreed would take...
Once we had him in the packs, the team headed out, led by the big killer! Big thanks to Cody, Matt F, and Tate’s Uncle Levi for the strong backs! One thing I can say, couldn’t have happened to a better kid!
Tate’s First Archery Bull:
Zach’s son Tate accompanied us on a few moose and elk trips early in the season. On the second trip, this fiery young bull couldn’t take the temptation of Zach and Tate’s calling from the small ridge above the bull. After working this bull for a couple hours, he came...
Thankfully I had a couple good buddy’s that were not far away that would help me pack him out the next day. Big thanks to Cody, Matt, and Zach for the help making it a 1 trip haul instead of 4 for me.
This was a great hunt considering I wasn’t even planning on shooting an elk until Zach had...
Archery hunting is by far my favorite way to hunt elk. Hearing those September bugles in the early hours as its gets light is tough to beat. Although it is my favorite time of year to hunt elk, the past 4 years have presented other opportunities for me to be hunting somewhere else during the...
I am sure he will be glad to tell you while we skin some river rats this winter! He might be a little long winded, its fun listening to his version:)
Thanks everyone for the nice comments, been out of town for a bit shooting silly elk that run into my arrows:)
Crap, that means another story...
These four boys may never top a weekend like this. I couldn’t have been happier to be a part of it all, watching the comradery these boys had and the unselfishness they all showed in trying to help one each other out instead of racing to see who shoots first. I was certainly impressed and...
Then on the evening of the following day, the last kid to shoot, Hunter, shoots what may be the biggest deer he will ever kill A 198” Kansas bruiser! What an unbelievable weekend.
After Kris and Joey arrived back, we made a stalk on the buck that put us all within 130 yards. Joey got set up and I told him the same thing as I did Braden…….”put the crosshair right in the ear and slowly squeeze”. Boom, his buck dropped like a rock! I turned as Braden slid up behind Joey...
That evening would be Joeys last opportunity so I thought the best odds of finding him a buck were to split up in different areas and glass. I told Just to drop Braden and I off on these Milo fields that looked promising and we would glass it until we found something. Just as we were getting...
That night I asked Braden if he wanted to head home the next day since he had his deer. He said he wanted to stay and help spot deer for the other three boys, and especially wanted Joey to get a deer before he left. Next morning we found a nice mule deer buck and as a non resident, Joey...
We got back to the ranch late and had some fantastic beef brisket for dinner. Braden ate a bit and headed for the living room chair. Apparently that pack out did him in Tired bugger! There is no way that could be comfortable……
And against most Kansas traditions, we hiked out far enough that you couldn’t get any motorized equipment there. Therefore, Braden and I got break down this bugger and make the pack back to the truck. Real proud of this kid as he packed both front shoulders and a back strap. Pretty impressive...
