^^^This is great advise.
You’re going to drive through a lot of elk country to a place where there aren’t many elk. Not saying you can’t have a great hunt but if I were you I would choose a unit with more opportunity to get into them.
^^^ Both the Maven B1 and B2 are fantastic binoculars for the price. I've spent time behind each and they have a wow factor for sure. Great resolving power, solid FOV, and deal great with glare/direct sunlight. Also a top notch warranty.
In my opinion, the weakest people I meet are ones who are close-minded and throw insults at others who don't share their views. I'm glad we have people like yourself contributing to the forum. You certainly give me entertainment on a boring day.
With that budget you have some great options. Though I own some Vortex products and think certain Vortex products are a good buy, in your price range I would choose other brands. You didn’t list what model Leupold binos you have so I’m not sure how nice they are. If I were you I would buy a...
Tract was at the Denver Sportsmen's Expo this past week and I got the chance to look through them quite a bit, inside and outside. They were very nice for the price for sure! Them and Maven have good bang-for-buck choices in the $700-$1100 range that are hard to beat.
The Maven C1s are a good buy at their price point. You could get a demo set of Tract Torics for right around $500 and they are a superior optic to the C1s IMO, and perhaps the best glass at that $500 price point. I've heard the Therons are good but never have had my hands on them.
Those are...
What size/weight of spotter? All tripod heads have weight limits that they'll be able to hold. For example the Vortex Summit SS-P worked great for my 50mm 24 oz spotter, but couldn't hold up my 65mm 48 oz spotter.
A few quotes from it:
“Even in our better units 350 bulls are not common anymore”
“People need to understand…Arizona trophy quality has slipped, age class has slipped.”
Quotes for the late hunt:
“Friends don’t let friends apply for late hunts in Arizona.”
“Don’t hunt flat units, or units...
To compare the archery hunt vs the late rifle hunt for unit 9, this year there will be 100 archery tags issued for a two week season vs 400 late bull tags issued for a one week season. The last time AZGFD posted estimated success rates in the pronghorn and elk brochure was in 2017, and it...
Ah, that also makes sense if you’re talking about comparing to other 15s. The Viper 15s only have a 50mm objective compared to pretty much every other 15 out there, which have 56mm objectives. The Viper 15x50 lets in less light and won’t be nearly as crisp as 15x56s especially in lower light...
The issues Bailer is describing are far more due to the magnification than the brand or model. A set of 10x binos are much more crisp in lower light, and have much better depth of field (how often you’ll have to refocus at different distances). The 10x42 Viper HDs actually have pretty good depth...
I’ve owned or spent time with most of the binoculars in that price range, and I think the Viper HDs in 10x42 are a good buy in your situation. They’re a binocular that will not hold you back from getting an animal on the ground IMO. Are there better images out there in that price range? Perhaps...
I wouldn't overthink it. A few years ago I was doing much the same as you are now, focusing on all the stats trying to find a unit that would give me some extra edge or advantage to get one down. What I found was that the hunter and harvest numbers are skewed one way or another and won’t...
Toprut is the easiest free tool out there to use.

Filter it for a resident and look at it in list view and you’ll see which units are drawable with less points. As previously mentioned Arizona has great elk hunting in most units, your issue is going to...
Huntin fool puts out a pdf every year that’s a helpful quick look at each state’s upfront and total costs. Wyoming makes you pay upfront.

I think it was an effort thing. Getting into elk in 76 often takes some work to get up high, which doesn’t work as well for older crowds. In 61 there’s bulls you can get into and shoot right off divide road.
