I scouted for my late rifle elk hunt in Arizona during the archery season. I never did run into other hunters when I was in the field, but I did my best to not chase bugles and blow out elk. Do the best you can as far as scouting without intentionally stirring up the elk too much and you...
Just to clarify on the Harris bipods, because the sizing can get confusing:
HBLS - 9" to 13" with swivel.
HB25S - 12" to 25" with swivel.
HB25CS - 13 1/2" to 27" with swivel.
Many people seem to be recommending one of those three. The 9-13 is the best of the three for prone shooting but...
I'm heading out for labor day weekend in Wyoming. It's a leftover tag so not a good chance to kill, but it should be fun none-the-less! That and I'll use it as scouting for the rifle season.
I struggled for years and years with slapping the trigger, which cost me more than one good animal. I was watching some Gunwerks videos on YouTube for whatever reason and came across a tip about thumb placement with your trigger hand. Putting my thumb along the side of the stock instead of...
Be prepared for bad weather. The Southwest Hunting Guide written by the biologists in the area state that hunter success often depends on weather. Do not skimp on gear and expect the worst every day you leave your camp. Other than that it sure is beautiful country, good luck to you!
Being in shape is, like you say, not so cut and dry. From my experience, people from the Midwest who venture into these western mountains for the first time will be somewhat unprepared for the mountains and the steepness regardless, though those that have good cardio health acclimate much...
The treestand recommendation is a good one. I have a work colleague who hunted the Kaibab years ago, and is a Missouri native so he always had a treestand in his truck. He was hiking and around and found a heavily used trail. He headed back to his truck, grabbed his treestand, and proceeded...
I own a pair of the Maven C.1s. They really are a spectacular pair of binoculars. Clarity, glare control, low light performance, and edge to edge clarity are all better than any bino I've ever owned up to $1k which is amazing. Incredible view. They do have their flaws, though, that allowed...
You know, that's exactly what Maven's demo program is for. Are you familiar with it? Order demo pairs of both binos you're interested in and send the pair back that you don't want within two weeks and you get your money back.
There are spotters that will be serviceable in that price range for sure. During my coues deer hunt two years ago I was running a Vortex Razor HD 11-33x50 and was watching a coues buck from 1600 yards and could tell he was 90"-100". Close enough for me. There's better glass out there for sure...
I am of the belief that 12x binos are a fantastic choice if you can handhold them (some can, some can't) especially in Arizona. They're particularly useful for coues deer hunting as the extra magnification I've found helps immensely off a tripod. Those little ghosts are hard to find with lower...
