    Colorado GMU 81 ELK

I live just North of GMU 81, and while I haven't hunted down there for many years, I do go there in the Summer months on pack trips with my horses/mule/burros. It's a big place, and if you're not familiar with it, it could deliver some surprises if you're just internet scouting it on Google...

Guides for elk hunting unit 78 and or 81 Colorado

I live just North of GMU 81, and like to recreate down there on horseback. One thing I think hunters that show up during hunting season may not realize, is the backcountry traffic that can take place in some of those areas during the Summer. Just because you're in the South San Juan...

    Air or foam sleeping pad

I've been sleeping in a tent for only about 55 years, so I don't know much about it. I've slept with nothing under me, and graduated up thru Thermarest mattresses and other stuff. These days, I just go to Walmart and buy a $7.00 Intex air bed that is 7" thick. I have a queen size, when my...

Elk Decoy: The Real Deal or Sucker Scam?

I have a Montana/Fred Eichler model Cow Elk decoy. At present, I've never had the opportunity to have a Bull see it. I do think if you called a Bull in, and he saw it, it would probably fool a rut crazed Bull. Given it's lightweight, and almost life sized, I've found even a gentle breeze can...

    Southern Colorado 3rd season

Southern Colorado is a big place. Also, if you happened to be planning to hunt between Laveta, and Fort Garland, and surrounding areas, the epic "Spring Fire" burned throught there, to the tune of over 100,000 acres. What GMU are you looking at? I live in 80, in So. Central Co..

Ugh, Another major Forest Fire Ongong

As a bit of an update from my original post, the "Spring Fire" that has now set a Colorado record for size & scope is over 100,000 acres, and has threatened Cuchara areas and then moved up towards the City of Rye.. Hwy. 160 is a major corridor for East/West travel into this area, and was...

Looking to head west, from WI

Once upon a time, I was a bit like yourself. I'm from Baraboo, in So. Central Wisconsin, but am now in Southcentral Colorado, on my 49 acre ranch, dead end road, surrounded on 3 sides by Federal Lands, and a 13,000 ft. mountain summit 5 miles behind me. I have a fleet of 2 horses a pack mule...

Ugh, Another major Forest Fire Ongong

The USFS uses Stages to regulate permitted uses. Here is a chart explaining the Stage I, II and III alerts. Stage III was implemented for a couple weeks in the 1.8 million acre San Juan National Forest. They have since regressed back to Stage II. Our similarly sized Rio Grande Forest is...

Ugh, Another major Forest Fire Ongong

I don't specifically know what the conditions are in the Wet Mountains, that are North of this fire, as far as the extent of the drought conditions. The photos I've been seeing of the "Spring Fire" here though are so horrendous, it's hard to comprehend. I saw photos taken by people in LaVeta...

Ugh, Another major Forest Fire Ongong

Living here in Southcentral Colorado, we sure are in severe drought conditions. The Spring I typically have my game camera on to watch the antlers grow on the Bulls all Summer is looking as though it may dry up? I wonder if my favorite wallows may as well? The "416 Fire" in GMU units 74 & 75...

Colorado's San Juan National Forest is now officially closed due to fire threats

I missed the announcement of the forest being opened again and back to a Stage II alert, so thanks for the info. It's still really dry here, and no rain in our area. My pasture is a sad state of yellow. Returned from a high country pack trip, and there is "some" water flowing, but down from...

How much competition will I weed out? Colorado OTC Archery.

I often am faced with some of these same questions in my hunting here in Colorado. I agree it's nothing to be walking a long distances in the dark to get to the area you want to hunt. Thing is, in doing that, I've busted the Elk in the dark, that otherwise would perhaps be moving over to the...

    Colorado 1st season rifle

I don't know a thing about GMU 62, but what I do know that unless the weather changes for the better, the Southern half of Colorado will be dry, or dried up! We are in a severe drought in the State this year. I just returned from a short pack trip, and have been watching the Springs and...

Colorado's San Juan National Forest is now officially closed due to fire threats

Where did you hear the SJNF is opening? I haven't seen any news release on this. Last I read, the 416 Fire was only 35% contained or so, and it would take a lot of rain to change the status..... It sure has an effect on commerce this way.

Colorado's San Juan National Forest is now officially closed due to fire threats

Not to get too much off topic, but as for the hay grown under pivots in the San Luis Valley, a great deal of that is pretty much pure alfalfa. Some is put through resident cattle herds, and then a tremendous amount goes out of here, enroute to interstate sales to others. As you may know, pure...

    Colorado unit 76

Oops! I just happened to look a bit closer, and the Northern portions of Unit 76, say South of the Rio Grande Reservoir, are in the Rio Grande National Forest, so that currently is NOT closed to entry at this time. Sorry for my error! You're welcome to PM me if that is of benefit to you?

CO Unit 82, Looking for any info!

I've ridden my horse into the Cherry Lake drainage, which is a bit North of Crestone there. Nice country and the Elk were grazing on both sides of the draw I was down in. You're in the land of 14 teeners here, so most would find it challenging to climb, and find the air molecules, when...

    Colorado unit 76

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're going to want to check into the situation at hand here. I live in Southcentral Colorado, not all that far from the Eastern side of Unit 76. Unit 76 is pretty much in the San Juan National Forest. At present, as I message you, the 416 Fire...

Colorado's San Juan National Forest is now officially closed due to fire threats

The comment wherein it was said; "the area I was hunting could really use a good burn" has me wondering what kind of habitat you were hunting? I can see some country profiting from a prescribed burn, such as Oak Brush, and perhaps other similar types, but I cringe a bit when I think of our...

Colorado's San Juan National Forest is now officially closed due to fire threats

As for monsoon season, bring it on. Thing is, my friends around Colorado are all talking about this drought. Sure it could change for the better, and quickly. The question is, will it? Living here in the center of the State, we never seem to get what I'd consider a surplus of rains or even...
