    Should I buy a .338?

Yes, "a bruise on your shoulder is like a broken nail", and like the broken fingernail that irritates you and catches just about everything that you touch, the pain from a recoil caused bruised shoulder will continue to hurt the more that you shoot and will develop into a flinch. Maning up to...

Let’s see some region 7 antelope!

My last region 7 antelope I've killed dozens of antelope, and have mounts on my wall of 7 bucks having up to 16" horns, but I've never measured one, so I don't have any idea what a 70" buck looks like. So now I just hunt antelope for the enjoyment of the hunt and to bring some meat home...

    Howa - Super Lite - 308

It's simple physics that "action equals re-action", so a lighter rifle would be easier to carry, but a heavier rifle helps to absorb some of the recoil. I see a lot of hunting shows with guys carrying full backpacks while they are hunting. I'm sure that they have 5-10 pounds of something in...

    Should I buy a .338?

Like so many of these threads, the discussion turns to muzzle brakes, and the BS of personal hate for them by some abounds: "If you need a brake, you should shoot a smaller cartridge." "Why would anyone put a brake on a .22 caliber rifle?" "The blast from a brake blows everything off the benches...

    Should I buy a .338?

My Dad didn't hunt, but he did give me my first .22 rifle when I was about 10-12, and a BB gun before that, so I did learn to shoot and liked it. I didn't hunt until I was in college. I shot my first elk with a borrowed 30-40 Krag, and my first centerfire rifle was a .30-06, which I later had...

    Audad questions?

The rams are pretty stocky. I've packed whole (but gutted) buck antelope out on my back, and there's no way I could have carried this aoudad out whole. I'd guess they're abouot the same height as a pronghorn but probably twice the weight. When I shot my aoudad, my guide said that they were...

Another meat safety question. Elk not recovered for 24 hours.

Every time that I see a TV show where they shoot an animal and say "they'll recover it in the morning" I think to myself "there''s a wasted animal!" This discussion comes up occasionally at our weekly Skeet shooting night at our gun club. Most of the guys there are long time elk and...

    Deadheads - Let's see 'em

The elk antlers are sheds that I found near Boulder, CO in the '60s, the ram is a domestic that I found near Craig, CO in the early '70s, the two outside buffalo skulls I found in Colorado in the '60s ... one near Leadville and the other in North Park. I found the white buffalo skull near...

    Audad questions?

Definately smaller than an Angus bull, and a lot smaller than a cow elk.

    Pray for me

And another time I defied death! Although this time my rifle was a dreaded Weatherby with it's Leupold scope and on top of that, I wore cotton jeans!!

    Pray for me

I have the top spot on my GF's prayer list. Her prayers must work because here I am with Black Death that I killed with one of my Rem 700s wearing a Leupold scope. ;)

Do I Need a New Taxidermist?

As others have mentioned, antlers and horns are rarely perfectly symmetrical. IMO if your taxidermist needs to "fix" anything on your mount, he should make sure that the eyes are level and perpendicular to the vertical axis of the animal's face.

    Caribou - Lets See Them!

Caribou are also one of my favorite animals to hunt. I shot my first caribou on a DIY hunt out of King Salmon, AK with 4 of my friends back in 1980. I didn't hunt them until 1999 when I went on a Dall sheep hunt in the Mackenzie Mountains of Canada's Northwest Territory where after I got my...

What is your single top hunting season goal this year? I expect updates damn it.

My #1 goal this season was my Alberta moose hunt. I had booked to for last year but because I didn't get a covid shot, I couldn't cross into Canada. My last two moose tags ended in tag soup. In 2020 I went on a moose/woodland caribou hunt in Newfoundland where we didn't see any caribou, and...

What was your first big game rifle, and do you still have it?

I killed my first deer, a spike Muley, back in 1965 hunting in NW Colorado with one of my college roommates and using a Winchester Model 94 .32 Spl that I borrowed from him. I went back with him the next year carrying a soprterized .30-40 Krag rifle that I borrowed from my Uncle. I shot my...

Tag Soup How Many Have Had It

As I posted earlier, I've had moose tag soup on hunts in Newfoundland and Alaska. Three weeks ago, I was on a Canadian moose hunt in northern Alberta. I think that we were too early for the rut, and by the 4th day of a 7 day hunt, I hadn't seen a moose. So with those thoughts in my mind and...
