    Thoughts?

I don't think that 300stw was refering to the slaughter of buffalo back in the 1800s with muzzleloaders and the early slower moving centerfire rifles, but the current "slaughter" of 1100 buffalo around Yellowstone done with modern high velocity rifles. As for the anti-lead bullet bandwagon...

Pitch the stock or pitch the gun?

It's just my own personal opinion, but I think that stock is just flat "buttt ugly!" So I must have the best of both worlds. I've had my SS Rem 700 in 7 mm RM for about 29 years and that rifle has been very good to me. I glass and pillar bedded it's action, floated the barrel, lengthened the...

I perfer lighter weitht, flexible sole boots for all of my hunting. Looking back at my pictures, it's hard to see what footware I was wearing, but my late in the season Beartooth ram and my mountain goat hunts, I was wearing leather upper, rubber lower, air bob sole LaCross Maine hunting boots...

WaPo: Popular handgun fires without anyone pulling the trigger, victims say

I don't have any Glocks or many other "new model" pistols, but I do have a bunch of other rifles and pistols and not a single one of them has ever fired without someone's finger on their trigger.

    Rifles for a lifetime?

2003 seems like it was just a couple of years ago... I bought my first centerfire rifle, a .30-06, when I lived in NW Colorado and I thought that it was my "do all" rifle. I loaded 125 gr bullets for prairie dogs, 150 gr bullets for deer and antelope, and 180 gr bullets for elk. That worked...

Forty years ago when I was hunting the Unlimited units I hunted 4 or 5 of the units and only hunted twice on the same mountain in one of the units. I didn't know how good we had it back then and I didn't hunt seriously enough. Each hunt only cost me a $25 Resident tag and a tank of gas, and I...

The part where “ my gun almost turned into a lightning rod “ reminded me about one of my trips into Unit 302 when it was still Unlimited. I had drawn a Goat tag in that unit that year, so I spent the $25 and bought a sheep tag just in case... My hunting partner and I took my horses and packed...

SKRE vs. KUUI vs. SITKA vs. First Light

OK Kirk, here's the old school saying that you don't need the latest and greatest in outdoor clothing to hunt elk. Yes, outdoor clothing has come a long way from the Army-Navy Surplus stuff many of us grew up with, but is the new stuff really necessary and is one new brand really that much...

Moose hunting is not for me.

I've killed, and eaten, over half of the 29 species of North American big game animals. IMO the best wild game meat that I've ever eaten was Bighorn sheep. I've also killed 2 bull Moose and took a friend in where he killed another big bull Moose, and he gave me a quarter of his Moose. So I've...

    leupold vx 3hd zero range

I have VX 3i CDS turret scopes on 5 of my hunting rifles. I've only had Leupold cut a custom turret for the one on my .300 weatherby. The ballistic info that I sent them for the turret was zeroed at 100 yds and the field verified bullet drop at 200, 300, and 430 yards. The turret that they...

300 Win Mag ammo for elk.

I've been a .30 caliber/180 gr bullet fan for elk ever since I shot my first bull back in 1966. I shot that first bull with a factory load, but all of them since have been with handloads. When I used a .30-06 I had good results with 180 gr Sierra GameKing bullets. For 20 some years I shot 180...

    45acp small primer

Whoever decided to put small primers in .45 acp cases should be shot! I pick up and reload all of my brass and every so often I get some that take small primers and they jam in my Dillon press. I crimp all of them with pliers so they never can be reloaded and throw them in my junk brass bucket.

Have you ever had to use your sidearm/bear spray while hunting

Reading @Irishman's post made me remember the one time that a black bear charged me... I was working for the Forest Service and one Friday afternoon I was driving back to the office and saw 2 of my co-workers parked on the side of the highway. I thought it was odd for them to be there so I...

1st Antelope Hunt - Check me

I've been hunting antelope since the early '70s and like most people, I take way more than I really need. As I see it, you only need 5 things to hunt antelope: Most western states require hunter orange, a hat + 400" outer garment in Colorado, Hat in Wyoming, and 400" outer garment in Montana...

Have you ever had to use your sidearm/bear spray while hunting

I've lived and worked in grizzly country since 1975. A few years ago a bowhunter in the field below and across the county road from my house filmed a grizzly as it walked by his stand, not 1/4 mile from my house. I've had numerous black bears in my yard and one came up on my back deck. The...

Looking for DIY ideas , something different to hunt

Up until about 20 years ago all of my hunts were DIY and most of them were also solo. These DIY hunts were in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. Not counting birds and varmints, on solo DIY hunts I've killed mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, black bears, Shiras moose...
