It all depends on how much shooting you will do. If you will only shoot maby less than 50 bullets a year, it probably wouldn't it to cast your own BP bullets. If you will shoot hundreds of BP bullets a year it would be cheaper to cast your own.
Like the old saying goes, "you get what you pay...
In the early '70s I still lived in Colorado, and a friend of mine there got me started shooting muzzleloaders. They were something new to me and were fun to shoot. My first muzleloader was a percussion .45 caliber Kentucky rifle that I built from a CVA kit.
Since I was already casting wheel...
I shoot at least 10 shots from 2 centerfire rifles almost every week throught the year. With a maximum of 3 in-state big game tags a year (which I don't always fill), that averages to about 500 practice shots for every shot hunting.
I don't know how I missed this thread earlier. As usual, Randy's write up and pictures were great. I've known Randy for many years, and I did almost this same hunt back on 1999 and was my first guided hunt. His report brought back many great memories from my hunt there.
Being an engineer...
I have a little drawer full of bullets that I've recovered from animals that I've shot. Many of the smaller animals, like deer and antelope, the bullets often pass completely through the animals, and more recently many of my Barnes bullets also completely passed through the larger animals like...
Wild sheep is also my favorite meat, but unfortunately it's not as easy to get as deer or elk,so it's been many years since I have eaten any.
I didn't bring any of my Dall sheep meat home with me, the Outfitter kept it all for camp meat, which was delicious!
Being lucky enough to have killed 3...
I started bow hunting in 1970 when I was still in the Army and stationed at Ft Sill, OK. I ordered a recurve bow and some fiberglass arrrows from Herter's. Prior to that I had only killed a few mule deer and 1 elk with rifles, so I didn't know much about bow hunting.
Several years later I was...
My Dad didn't hunt, but he bought me a bolt action, single shot Remington .22 LR when I was about 10, and he taught me how to shoot it safely.
It wasn't until I was in my 2nd year of college that one of my rooommates invited me to go deer hunting in NW Colorado with him. He loaned me a Win 94...
Up until 1978 my only centerfire rifle was a .30-06, and I used that rifle for eveything from prairie dogs to elk. In '78 I had that rifle rechambered to .30 Gibbs, and I built myself a deer and antelope rifle, a .257 Ackley on a Mauser Mark
X action fitted in Fancy walnut from Fajen, and...
I'm not a fan of euro mounts. You will enjoy your mounts the rest of your life! I've done shoulder, pedestal, and a few life mounts of most of my trophys from Africa, New Zealand, Canada, and Alaska, and of my best Colorado and Montana animals. They take up a good portion of my house, but I...
Great pictures! I've only hunted in Alaska 3 times, but I've enjoyed every minute of those trips.
It's sad that you have to scratch out your face when you post a pic of your with your animal.
Congratulations, that's a great bull!
My bull made great burger. One night my GF and I were eating Musk ox burger tacos, and I said that we could have been the only people in the world eating Musk ox tacos that night.
Did you skin him out for a full mount? I think that my "Hippie cow" is...
Like others have posted, its hard to beat a .30-06.
I bought my first centerfire rifle when I still lived in Colorado back in 1967, and it was a .30-06. For about 10 years I didn't have any problem keeping my freezer full of deer, elk, and antelope meat. Back then I loaded it with 150 gr...
