Does anyone have any insight on general habits of CO high country deer in early September? Not talking locations, units, etc but curious what everyone's thoughts are on:
1. Will the deer shift to a certain aspect of the mountain as the grass dries up?
2. Do the deer focus on a certain food...
Scouting now is a waste of time unless you’re unfamiliar with the roads/access. If you do scout now, just look for cow moose, learn the roads, and save your time to hunt in late Sept. return to where the cows were. Any bull you find now will move before opener.

Does anyone know how long (roughly) it takes lichen to start growing on a horn?
The antler is in great shape and was in thick timber. I’d guess it’s a 4-5yo horn but figured the lichen might be a more accurate indicator.

This will be the end of some of the best elk hunting in the state. A few select ranches will have an age class for years after; however, these bulls move 10-30 miles to rut some years. There isn’t a ranch large enough in SE MT to manage for an older age class even if they tried.
